Sanchez was bigger, stronger, and more durable. Gomez's changing stylistic preference (he'd become more of a stalking puncher by this point) didn't help matters.

Gomez probably underestimated Sanchez a bit, but he probably still would have lost even if he didn't have his so-called distractions.

Sanchez was just a bit too tough for Gomez. He was taller, bigger, and had the reach advantage.

Not to take any thing away from Sanchez but I'd of liked to have seen a return. Gomez was hurt early in that fight and didn't really get over it. Such a quality fighter, not saying he would of won but it could of been interesting.
Same really as when Gomez fought Zarate.

It was all of the above really, but Gomez made it even worse for himself by brutally baiting Sanchez before the fight..questioning his manhood and really going pretty low with his taunting...over and above the old Puerto Rico vs Mexico thing. He woke up the beast in Sal...he really inspired him to be his best...maybe Sanchez should have thanked Gomez for all that, lol.

similar to Tito Bhop in a way, ko artists on a roll, movin up a division and gettin outboxed. maybe 9\11 affeted things in that fight a bit but from what i ve heard Gomez didnt train like he should off, more partyin. Shame cos he was a beast!

    Sanchez had his number.

As a Mexican, I can't help but laugh every time I see Sanchez beating Gomez' fouling, cheating ass to pieces. First knocking him down, then rearranging his face, then the prolonged beating he gave out, similar to what Julio Cesar Chavez did to Edwin Rosario for all the shiit he talked about Mexicans.

Gomez SERIOUSLY underestimated Sanchez, not just because he was Mexican, but because he had all of his wins by way of KO and felt that Sanchez would cower in fear. Guess again!

I heard that them and their families were close after this fight....weird especially after all of that racist stuff Gomez said about Sanchez. Sanchez just would not have been beaten by any Gomez that showed up that night. It's hard to have many guys at FW beating Sanchez at his best really, hell of a fighter. Gomez wasn't the same terror after moving up from SBW but he still was skilled and very determined.

Gomez was lazy and took Sanchez for granted............ Gomez had to drop 4 pounds on the eve of the fight and also had been seen with a puta near his hotel room prior to the fight.... Gomez was not totally focused for Sanchez in 1981 and he got his ass kicked for it, too.......

I am not the biggest Gomez fan and believe he is overrated around here especially in a H2H sense. But I do appreciate him...

Anyway I think he gets sold short in this fight. He gave a tremendous showing against a fellow atg who was larger and IMHO more skilled. After being behind early and seemingly out of it, he battled back and had the scores just about notted after 6 rounds....Sal was just to much....I think it was an extremely gutty performance for Gomez!

Gomez really was only special in the ring when he was a well-tuned 122 pounds......... At 126 or 130, Gomez was normal....... He was hot and cold between 126 and 130.......

Gomez smoked the limited but tuff '84 LaPorte at 126 pounds, and got a nice gift at 130 pounds against '85 Lockridge....

    NOTE:

Gomez was dusted in Dec. 1984 by Nelson at 126 and waxed by Al Layne in 1986 at 130 pounds....

Yep, pretty much this 100%. Gomez always had a big heart but he just wasn't as fluid and dangerous above SBW. Pretty inconsistent past SBW and yes he did get a gift against Lockridge lol.
