ok, well i noticed a few of you have salvador sanchez as your favorite fighter and i have to profess an almost total ignorance in regards to him and his fights so where should i start? what are some good fights i need to watch to learn about him? i've only seen his fight with nelson thx
To get an idea of Sanchez's ability, watch his fights with Wilfredo Gomez and Danny Lopez 1 and 2. Two top calibre opponents whom he beat in impressive fashion. He fought his best in his biggest fights.
As most Posters will tell you, check out the Wilfredo Gomez - Sal Sanchez Title fight in its entirety. Known as "The Battle of the Little Giants". Unfortunately Sal's death prevented a later rematch.
How about the Fight against Patrick Ford. Sanchez delivered a beautiful job of body punching in that one. And in the late rounds when Ford started wilting under the pressure of the attack. Howard Cosell started questioning Ford's stamina, Oblivious to everything unfolding before his eyes!
I'm more impressed with Sanchez in his fights with Lopez than against Gomez to be honest. He just shows the full variety of skills. [YT]GjUWyx0jECQ[/YT]
One factor I think is important is that Lopez seemed pretty much unstoppable when Sanchez beat him the first time.
................I like the call for the Ford fight. It was probably the closest he came to losing as champ (I had him slightly ahead at the time of the Nelson stoppage, and the Ford fight dead even after 14), but it was a very interesting fight and a not altogether unimpressive one for Sanchez. It showed that when he had to, he could shun his counterpunching skin and get aggressive. Ford had done such a good job of countering Sal from outside, that the champ had to jump in quickly and smother Ford inside with flurries in the later rounds. It worked. The Lopez wins were very good of course. A guy like Sanchez would always pose problems with Lopez though. As Danny's manager Bennie Georgino said, "In order to beat Sanchez you had to move side to side, jab, flurry, and stay with him." Lopez was not this kind of fighter, and Sanchez had the chin to take Lopez's big bombs without reaction. A couple of his fights pre-title are cool to look at too, because they show a different fighter than the smooth, calculating counterpuncher most know him for being. In his bouts against people like Cosme, he was more a stalker who liked to trade. Still pretty slick and good defensively, but much more aggressive. It was once he was able to work over the full fifteen rounds that he found his true, natural style, however.
Id recommend you watch Sanchezs fight vs Lopez,Nelson and Gomez. 4 great fights between 4 great Hall of Fame fighters.
