Just a quick question about Salvador Sanchez as I am going to watch some of his fights later on and don't know a great deal about him. Did he deserve a title shot? Did he beat top guys to get the shot or was he given a high ranking because he beat lots of stiffs? The only name I recognise from boxrec pre Danny Lopez fight is Hector Cortez (from his fight with Azumah Nelson). Any other notable's?

I know its a bit of a weird question its just that I like Sanchez and know little of his first 30 odd opponents which annoys me.

Sanchez was suppose to be "just another routine defense" for Little Red. Danny stated in an interview a few years ago that they new very little about the kid. The plan for Danny at the time was one more defense at 126, and then move to 130, since Danny was starting to struggle with the weight.

The fact that Sanchez beat Little Red TWICE, and then beat a string a very good fighters shows he was mostly certainly worthy of his shot at the champ.

Well, you have to start somewhere. It's not a big deal.

Sanchez was tremendous and one of my all-time favorite fighters.

Richard Rozelle is a former kronk fighter who was a National Amatuer Champ and a fringe contender.

James Martinez is a former National Am champ and was a tough journeyman in the 70s and 80s became a just someone to pad your record with in the 90s

He lost to Antonion Becerra for the Mexican Bantam title the only time he ever loss

Sal Torres had challenged Arguello for the world title but got kod in 3, Sanchez kod him in 7

Fel Clemente was a phillipino who also challenged Danny Lopez for the title but was dqd for headbutting. Sanchez decisioned him

A friend of mind Johnny Ortiz use to manage and train Hector Cortez at the Main street gym in LA which is no longer there, he told me Cortez was giving Sanchez all he wanted before being stopped (which he says was Contro) they were both prospects at the time. I heard Cortez was very talented but i hear undisciplined, he ended up becoming a Journeyman steppingstone type later on.
