this guy really could fight. he was 5'7 inches tall and i have not seen a guy so skillful from them days p4p apart from dempsey.

he could do it all. imo he is a mix of dempsey. he could fight going backward, forward. he could box and fight. if you watch this clip you could see how comfortable he feels about his defense. apparently he had HW power. the guys he fought said they never been hit harder.

i was just wondering how would he fare against big guys, how big was biggest boxer he faced and beat? i hear he could really bang, would he be able to hurt big guys these days?

i remember watching qawi face a 235pound foreman, qawi defensivley was top in that fight, however he wasnt as mobile, still he landed with alot of shots (which caused foreman to fart).

i may get slaughtered for saying this:yep im pretty sure langford would have given foreman a much tougher fight! langford really impresses me for a guy who was fighting in the early 1900's.

im not surprised dempsey and jack johnson evaded him like the black plague.

I don't think i've ever seen a bonifide great so open. Crude but relentless.

Maybe. It's not just a size thing - although I would pick both Foreman and Tyson to pulverize him.

70s Foreman would decapitate him, but 90s Foreman would be alot more vulnerable to small-man-itis.

Thanks for posting that, Big N Bad. That was some great stuff, especially from Langford's era. He had much better technique than a lot of his peers that I've had the privaledge to observe.

it would be better to compare him to light-heavies, his natural weight

One of the all-time greats, no doubt. Perhaps he was considered a defensive wiz for his day, but the film evidence we have suggests he led with his chin often. However, given some more modern training, he would be as good as they come in the middle and LH divisions. Far too small for today's heavies, though.

he was no defensive master, but then again he could block and as the video says had subtle head movement

Langford had the power to KO bigger men. Wills and Godfey come to mind.

I'd agree totally. Some good down to earth posts from you i've read lately regarding these topics.

Langford could Knock out most of them on any given day.

I could imagine him tearing through some of the recent second-raters, like Golota, Rahman or Ruiz.

I'd actually give him more of a chance against the young George Foreman than against the older version.

Langford was a terror, a murderous sneaky puncher. Hesistate or leave an opening and he'd put you out cold, any sized man.

a respectable trainer, who trained alot of great fighters from dempsey, johnson and langford said dempsey was better than langford...
do you agree or was he being biased?

It could be argued either way.

"They said I feared no man. The hell I didnt. I feared one even smaller than myself. Sam Langford"

    Jack Dempsey

Dempsey definitely admired Langford as a fighter and probably coppied his style. He considered Langford to be the greatest fighter that ever drew on a glove.

    wow!

i thought there was a lot of similar things in the way dempsey and langford fought. they both had very good subtle head movement and both were very agile along with having devastating power!
