Bump...it's a stretch to match Yarosz with an ATG like Langford...but any opinions on the forgotten great Yarosz?
It's interesting because the first post doesn't make it clear what you mean. Is it unfair to match an ATG with Yarosz, or is it unfair to match a "modern scientist" with a primitive boxer like Langford? It depends on who is making the thread, doesn't it? No, it's not unfair. Yarosz would arguably be the best middle that Langford ever beat. It depends, really, on where you drop him in Langford's timeline. He's obviously not going to beat the Langford that terrorised McVey and Jeanette, obvious to me anyway.
I think Yarosz is being sold short here. The guy beat Tommy Freeman, Vince Dundee, Ben Jeby, Pete Latzo, Babe Risko, Ken Overlin, Solly Kreiger, Lou Broulliard, lost two nip/tuck fights to Conn one which most people thought he won (and beat him in a third bout), Archie Moore, Al Gainer, Nate Bolden, lost a controversial decision to Lloyd Marshall that most thought he won and came back to beat him. The guy was stopped only once in his entire career and that came from a knee injury, not a legit KO. Yarosz proved pretty conclusively that he could be competetive with anyone he was in the ring with when at his best.
I agree. Yarosz fought a 'who's who' in a very deep talent pool. I think around middleweight, Yarosz would give Langford a tough fight stylistically.
Did you mean Langford is an ATG? If so I can see the distinction,I suppose it depends on what stage of his career Langford is at? I don't know enough about Yarosz to comment, but I'll follow the thread and hopefully be informed as it goes along. Klompton's brief rundown on Yarosz shows him to have been a seriously dangerous guy.
Good post all around, I'm in the middle with how Langford would transition to modern era, I think his transition is much better than others of his era due to his physical talents. Let's not forget that just because Pacquaio can batter Margarito and Cotto doesn't mean he can beat Marquez. I don't think Langford encountered defensive footwork and lateral movement on the level of Yarosz.
Yes, I agree with this. In fact, he probably "translates" better than anyone who fought in he 1800s and I include Joe Gans in that statement.
