with all the dream matchup threads going, here's a fight that intrigues me as much as any. i'm torn on my pick here. thoughts?
I think this fight is where Moore's vulnerability could do him in. Langford is just too clever of a hitter to be avoided entirely by Moore's engaging if defensively adept style and when he lands, Langford would have a greater effect than Moore would on him. In a series though, Moore could work out Langford's style over time and eventually score a win over him.
I think I'll go for Sam,he was beating heavyweights when he scaled under 170lbs. Better chops ,equal or better power.Langford ,and possibly by ko.
A fascinating one, kmac ! Tough one to call. I take Moore on close decision. Archie was a little naturally bigger than Sam.
tough fight and a series may have mixed results but Archie was KING at 175lbs and was the KO king but also much much ring savvy...Sam a dangerous banger and aggressive but I think the Mongoose had too much in his bag of tricks and arsenal and although he match Sam in power decides to bang and move and use his cross-armed defense to win a close UD Archie rules 175 and only the complete package of Ezzard out-does the Mongoose in a series
HeGrant, You are vastly underrating Archie Moore's power. He had a titanic right hand punch, he could knock you dead with it. See for yourself [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMPXHqGiB28[/ame] In case you have not seen, the Ring Magazine made a list of the top 100 greatest punchers of all time list. Archie Moore came in at number 4. That's right...FOUR. Langford came in at number 2, which is expected, but don't underrate how much of a huge puncher Archie Moore was at 175lb. He was up there with anyone. Not only did he have great power, he was a master at setting traps and finishing people. He was the complete package as a puncher.
This. In a different league power-wise. He was able to stop 200-plus lb heavyweights with a single blow. Archie was no fancy dancer, he was a mixer(and a great one at that). But mix with Langford at his best and you're going to get stretched. Langford by mid or late-rounds KO.
No I am not. Archie was a terrific puncher for a light heavy and a pretty good at heavy although I personally think his knockdown of Rocky was a bit over rated. I've been watching a ton of Marciano lately and a big part of why Archie dropped him was because he caught him coming right into the shot ... normally I do not think that punch would have dropped Rocky but that's just my opinion ... Charles hit Rocky with some bombs like he hit Satterfield with and Rocky walked right through them .. anyway, back on point, the difference was that Langford is one of the biggest punchers ever even at heavyweight. Harry Wills said no one ever hit him like Langford. So did Jeannette and McVey. Smith and Flynn both said he hit harder than Dempsey. He was just a freak.
You don't endlessly need to defend yourself. We know you like to have it both ways .. then start an endless cycle of last work freak behavior and personal insults .. McVeyisms ... (and of course ending with this guy )
