After the second fight between Sam Langford and Sam McVea you see some journalists saying things like "how the hell did Mcvea get the decision, he threw nothing but jabs". You get journalists of the period who distinguish between jabs, and what they call "damage causing punches", such as hooks and crosses. We all know how making the fight was seen as being important back then, and many people seem to have taken the view that a fighter who hid behind his jab was not making the fight. Another thing I will add is that this view seems to have been most strongly held in Europe and that might explain why so many European heavyweights have had dangerous right hands, such as Carpintier Schmeling and Johansen.
