I remember an older Dwight Braxton Quawi giving Foreman a tough time and as good as Qwawi was he was no Langford....I see a differcult fight for George...he may win but a close on that Sam could win by late stop
BIG DEE HERE= First things first, Sam Langford fought Harry Wills and others up in the teens he weighed in at 200 to 210lbs on a regular basis. He had also grown a couple on inches so he was about 5' 8" almost 5' 9". When he fought Jack Johnson in 1906 he weighed in at 156lbs at was a tall 5' 6". Johnson weighed in at 195lbs with the weigh-in coming the morning of the fight. By fight time Johnson walked in the ring probably weighed a good 200 to 205 Langford on the other hand was a growing welterweight and had made it to middleweight for the fight. Langford put weight on for Johnson while Johnson lost weight for Langford. LANGFORD HAS HIS WORK CUT OUT FOR HIM AS HE HAS A MONSTER IN FRONT OF HIM. THE THING ABOUT LANGFORD WAS THAT HE COULD TAKE AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF PUNISHMENT AND STILL WIN THE FIGHT AS IN THE WILLS FIGHTS. LANGFORD KOed WILLS WITH ONE PUNCH BOTH TIMES AND HARRY WILLS SAID THAT HE NEVER SAW WHAT SAM KOed HIM WITH.
please let me know how warm, wonderful and comforting it is to live in a fantasy land filled with supermen and heroes... then i will tell you to grow up.
Foreman by KO. Not very fair matchup. Langford can't dance away from danger (not his style), and doesn't have enough defensive body movement.
Yeah, but Langford was old, ring-worn, half blind and massively out-sized. I'd say it's a damn good win for Langord, despite Godfrey's inexperiance.
Godfrey did not hit as hard as Foreman, nor was he nearly as durable. If you want to look at Langford's power, he KO'd Joe Jeanette, who was only stopped twice in 165 fights! Langfrod Ko'd Sam McVey who was only KO'd 5 times in 96 fights. The McVey KO was a prime version of McVey. On weight and power, McVey is somewhat comparable to Foreman, though not quite on Foreman's level. However McVey had much better stamina than Foreman did by a coutnry mile. Langford also capped a near prime version of Harry Wills.
If Langford gets past the mid-rounds he'd be virtually home and dry, I reckon he'd stand a very good chance of doing so: he was a very acomplished ring general. This ain't going to be a Marciano or Frazier type matchup whereby a much smaller opponent is moving in towards Foreman. Langford UD.
I only brought up Godfrey because I've often seen him compared to Foreman and was similar in size. I don't consider it Langford's best win or anything like that.
Godfrey actually did hit comparable to foreman. he scored 82 knockouts in 99 wins, and at 6'3 225lb was much taller and bigger than sam mcvea. I think godfrey was a harder puncher and better fighter than sam mcvea. As for durability, godfrey was only starched as a novice, no one came close to knocking him out in his prime. Imagine george foreman getting thrown in in his 2nd pro fight against sam langford, you think he would not get knocked out?
What I am confused about is the same people that pick foreman to knockout dempsey, marciano, frazier early, are picking 5'6 180lb langford to have a real shot vs foreman. why?
