Sam Langford vs James Jeffries

Good morning ,my Jackal headed friend.

This is a misconception of Jeffries style ,we have ZERO reports of him throwing his undersized opponents around, allthough it keeps being repeated on here.

Please produce ONE example of Jeffries throwing an oppnent around like a rag doll.

I would be astonished if Langford was not the more powerful hitter of the two and his 129 kos reinforce this opinion.

How did Sharkey survive in their first fight when Jeffries had two healthy arms?

This same Sharkey was wrecked twice by one punch ko's from Fitz.


Jeffries was not an all time banger , he usually wore his man down ,he also had an average of 34lbs weight advantage over his challengers.
Langford was a welterweight when his manager issued the challenge to all except Jeffries.

 

Jeffries complained that the reason he could not finish Sharkey was because the Sailor was all over you, and was too fast for him to get set for a power shot.
If he thought that about the wide open slugging Sharkey he could be in trouble against the more refined ,faster ,and much harder hitting Langford.

 

There's little basis for that, his chin is based off taking a 38yo 170lb Fitz's shots and never took on a 200lber until Johnson where he was stopped, past prime or not

Fitz is maybe a good comparison here though. But Fitz was 38 and past his best so is unlikely to have the same offensive arsenal at that age, we can assume Prime Langford has a greater workrate, we know Langford put combinations together more. Still Fitz did win most of the early rounds on speed, Langford at least likely repeats this feat.

 

That's a good point, I didn't realise Sam was only 147lbs when that was said, they probably would have had a different view with the 180lb version. Good point about Sharkey too

I like Langford as much as any old-timer does, however, against Jeff around circa 1902, I think the bigger, stronger champion eventually wears down Langford for a KO.... Jeff was no slouch.... He just didn't have a whole lotta' fights........

It's a very interesting match up if you're matching prime for prime ... a welter Langford has little shot but a 1910 version v.s. a prime Jeffres is quite interesting as I'm of the school that a prime Langford flattens anyone under 200 that comes at him to slug ... his power was unquestioned, he had terrific speed, good reach, fabulous condition and a hell of a chin ... again, a who knows ...

 

Okay, given the age factor and the fact that it is prime Langford and Langford is not just any old great, I think I might give you tjat one for now

 

He took a battering off fitz without ever going down. Fitz and choynski are lauded for their power and neither could drop james.

Maybe you're right though, maybe there isn't enough evidence to back up the claim. It's not like he faced mcvey nor johnson in his prime and perhaps they would have tested his chin.

I have am image of him being unshakeable but maybe that image is unjustified, however we can't conclude the other scenario, that he's chinny, based on his career.

Maybe i'll settle for average chin.

There is no evidence that Jeffries could take the punches oF
REAL HEAVYWEIGHTS.
Be that as it may.
My gut feeling is,he had an alll time great chin.
Possibly the best of the heavy champs.
In today's world he may have been tkod in his second fight against Fitz .
But, let us face facts , the man weathered extraordinary punishment against the hardest hitters of his day, he had to have a chin on a par with Chuvalo.

 

Shot for shot Fitzsimmons hit as hard as Dempsey, Marciano or Louis. To say Jeffries never took the shot of a real heavyweight is simply false. Would getting hit by the 260 pound Carnera be more significant proof for you ?
