Well, the question of rights and the question of judging acts or behaviour are two separate issues. If you want to just talk about your "right to ..." then, yes, you have that right.
But as Seamus said, it's a mistake to think anything happens in a moral vacuum.

If you stop to consider that many of the films you own could have been burned by the previous guardian before you got the chance to acquire them, then surely you would consider that a "wrong" thing to do.

"Oh, by the way, klompton, I just burned a dozen Harry Greb fights"
"Oh, that's okay, that's absolutely your right to do so."

Yes, I understood that. I'm glad I wasn't misunderstanding or misrepresenting.

Anyone who believes it is wrong.

I never said it was greed.
And if i wanted your fight films I'd make you a generous offer. :good

We would like to see the video, that is clear. However, I described you wrong earlier; you did not choose your capitalistic ways, you blindly accepted them.

Your method of dealing with the world is unhealthy and greedy, and does not help anyone but you.

    That much is true.

Legality has nothing to do with it; the law was created in a capitalistic country, by capitalists who only want their philosophies rewarded.

**** what the law says, we as intelligent people can see which is the correct way to deal with things, and it ain't by being greedy.

Yes unforgiven but I go into this hobby knowing full well that not all films will be saved or respected by their owners in the way I will. I know that someone out there has probably thrown out a Greb film or something just as rare. So why should that shock me? Im not here to dwell on what might have been, Im here to find what IS.

While the world may not operate in a moral vacuum (and in this day and age that is up to debate) I see nothing wrong morally or otherwise with the way I conduct my collection. If you think I have some Karmic payback coming then so be it but I doubt I do, at least not in regards to fight films. In fact Id wager that most of the people on here who criticize me today would readily trade for something in my collection if they found something equally rare tomorrow. If not then is that karmic payback or the pot calling the kettle black?

I haven't condemned your outlook, or the practice of hard core collectors as a group. I've just tried to explain them. And from the feedback you're giving me, I've portrayed it accurately.
It is what i said it is, and it's not the alternative. I have pointed out that I believe there is an alternative.
I dont really make a moral judgment on your conduct, i dont consider the subject of fight films that important to force me to take a moral position. Maybe if you were burning them I'd call you a naughtly man.

I thought Seamus' use of the word "fetishitic" was fair. I think "selfish" is quite accurate too, but I know that has negative and perjorative connations, so I'd use it in its softest sense, best summed up in your own words : "having a film to use as a bargaining chip for an equally rare film is valuable to me, much more valuable than the tiny niche group of people who would be interested in seeing it or owning their own copy for free."

    I dont believe in karma.
And personally I dont care that much about those fight films that remain rare, I certainly dont come close to having your passion for the field, and I laud your efforts.

    I dont doubt that either.

Personally, If I had something rare and of interest i'd put it up on youtube to view if I knew how (if it was on 8mm or some VHS or other format I might just be too lazy to do so without help though ).

And if i really wanted to see the film you've got I'd just offer to buy a copy outright. Like you implied, nothing in this world should be expected for free.

I was not making a personal comment on your actions about keeping footage to yourself, merely playing devil's advocate with myself. I have made my personal comments on you ,and they have nothing to do with you denying access to aficionados to your private boxing film collection. As I have allready said ,you have the right to do with them as you wish.

    Nothing special about me, except that I don't tell lies.<iframe src="http://www.videosurf.com/vembed/9703677?width=640&height_vs=388&isAutoPlay=false" width="640" height="388" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" border="0"></iframe><p style="padding: 0px!important; padding-top: 5px!important; margin: 0px!important; font-size: 12px!important; width:px;"><a href="http://www.videosurf.com/video/sam-langford-highlights-9703677">Watch this video on VideoSurf</a> or see more <a href="http://www.videosurf.com/fireman-jim-flynn-165199">Fireman Jim Flynn Videos</a> or <a href="http://www.videosurf.com/sam-langford-160643">Sam Langford Videos</a></p>

    I just have 2 questions:

    1. If Klompton were to release a video on youtube hypothetically, he still owns the rights to the fight, no? So if a documentary wanted to use the footage, they would still come to Klompton, am I right?

    2. If people are going as far as to try to persuade a grown man into releasing his investments, they should have the power to go out and get what he has. Quit whining, and if you want them that bad, go out and get them. Make it a dream of yours, or a goal. He has a brain, 2 arms, and 2 legs just like all of you. Whatever he has, you can have to. I bet Klompton didn't whine about people releasing videos before he had a big collection.

Bottom line: Talk is cheap. All of you are saying you would release videos if you had them. Yea? Then go out, make some money, get some videos, and release them. Because in this world you follow your own standards, but don't try to push your ideals and ethics on someone else. Live to your own standards. Stop expecting the world to operate under what you believe is right or wrong. If you can't learn to deal with that mentally, have a nice life lol

I want to see these videos just as bad as all of you. So hopefully one day I will make enough money where I can do just that.

Sharing is a plus. Not sharing what you've paid for is normal. I say there should be more appreciation for those who do, and less criticism of those who don't.

Besides, I've always felt that most boxing films will find their way to the internet one way or another. It's inevitable in my view.

these films have become more for fetishists, akin to your underground pornography crowd, than real students of the game. i say this in part because there is very little to be learned from pre-1915 films, especially when they are so poorly shot and degraded over the last 95+ years. they only interest me marginally. i much more excited about contemporary accounts, newspaper or magazine articles or recovered interviews.
