No H. E. is not a bigot ,even though he thinks black fighters have inherently faster handspeed than white boxers. What he is, is someone who doesnt like to be contradicted,as his tasteless remark about "chambers " proves.
I havent got the link, tried once and failed.I think Johnson looks boring on film, allways have, Langford would be more my type of fighter as I love Dempsey.
Question .if Jeanette's skills are superior to Johnson's, how come he only beat him once in multiple tries ,and that by a dsq?
I am glad others have seen this ,but comparison's between them and Johnson , will only get credence from me when they are given by posters, other than your self.

I don't know for sure. Joe Woodward, hardly a reliable sourcse, claimed the French were grooming Carpentier for the title, which is plausible. Also Sam had returned to America shortly after the Jeabette fight. He did beat Curran before leaving but I'm still trying to ascertain if this was billed for the title.

I agree Johnson looks boring on film. Films show him with a low guard, limited laterally agility movement, and an over rated defense where once can see him being hit by cruder and smaller men. Its a pity you can't get the link to work. For a guy who claimed an IQ of 139 IQ, one would think you could figure it out.

Easy answer, and one we have been over before. Jeanette said he turned pro late at age 25, so you can pretty much dismiss any fights on his record before 1904

When Jeanette first meet Johnson he was a raw novice with an 0-3 record, yet that was good enough to draw vs. a much more experienced Johnson who had at least 40 fights under his belt! Holy cow, no ATG I can think of has a mark like that on his record after 40+ fights. To draw to an 0-3 guy who was Ko'd in his last fight? Bawhahahaha! Yeah sure, Johnson was ready for Jeffries in 1905. NOT. Any modern top ten fighter who drew with a 0-3 guy that was Ko'd in his last fight would be out of the top ten.

The next time they meet Jeanette had a known 5-4-2 record, and won! Indeed Jeanette had Johnson hurt in round one. Read the review:deal. Johnson threw a mean low blow in round two. Jeanette could not continue, and Johnson was disqualified, but some how manged to keep his colored title. Absolute BS.

Shortly there after, Johnson won a news 3 and 6 round match. Big deal. Then he won a 15 rounder. However their last 10 round match when Jeanette was still on the he green side was a draw.

Did you cast a blind eye at the comments of others in this thread? Those who have seen the link were impressed. HE Grant is a big Johnson fan says he thinks Sam would have Ko'd Johnson. If you ever seen the 1913 Langford vs. Jeanette film you will know why. In addition the fighters of the times felt Langford would have won.

    Klompton,

In the news reviews you read, who do you think deserved the decision in the Jack Johnson vs. Jim Battling Johnson match?

Are you aware that one judge felt Jim Battling was the better, and the two others said it was a draw. A very credible source like the Cyber Boxing Zone says this was a scheduled 20 round match. If that is true, Jim Battling should have been the winner via TKO.

I haven't been able to get in either. Perhaps it's a regional thing based on IP Address.

I doubt you'll get much help here. We're witnessing a group of boxing historians comparing "****" size, which is rather tedious.

I havent read any first hand accounts of the Johnson-Johnson fight. I would be very interested but I would guess the vast majority are french and thus hard to acquire.

I was not aware Langford was stripped but the title was fairly pointless. He wasnt given wide recognition and since this did coincide with Carpentier's run at the HW championship I would guess that the idea that the French were trying to pad his credentials is a definate possibility.

Jeanette needs to drop those fairy tights and put on some slick lookin bagggy shorts. Then he'll look badass.
