Sam Langford gave every heavyweight he met in the ring the battle of their lives, but would he be able to beat Joe Louis?
Sam Langford at 5ft 7in and 185 lbs Vs Joe Louis 6 1/2 ft 218 lbs seems pretty cut and dry especially since were talking about HW Champ Joe Louis. But then consider Jack Dempsey at 6ft 1in and refused to fight Langford. But then Dempsey was the same weight as Langford around 187. So I guess I would ask, Would the 30lbs on Louis side be to much for Langford or would that play into Langfords hands capitalizing on slower reflexes and picking Joe apart. This is one theory..
Langford gives Louis the fight of his life until he gets caught and stopped around the ninth or tenth.
As great as he was I don’t think I’d favor him over Louis. Could he give a good account of himself ? Perhaps.
I feel like you guys are really underestimating Langford here. Langford and several of his contemporaries, especially Black Murderers Row would be fatal to fight for a title shot. Louis would not be prepared for the determination of a prime Langford being offered a title shot. No way in damn hell will he face any other opponent as hungry as Langford for the crown. But the immense damage Langford will deal out and especially the damage Langford is willing to take in a situation like this. He would sooner be blinded and killed by Louis than be stopped or kayo'd! But I think Louis will just pile on too many punches. Louis certainly wins on points and a kayo is very possible. This leaves in my opinion, Langford's only hope is a kayo which according to many accounts of Langford's strength and power, would indicate that a kayo is possible. possible. but not likely.
Agreed. The Langford from that Jeannette fight on YouTube would give anyone in history a run for their money!
Size is important but not everything... However you have selected Louis at his heaviest, against Charles, way past his prime. At his best he was ~ 200, I would take him just a few pounds over, although vs. Schmelling 2 he was under. Also he is listed at 6'2", but assuming rounding up, maybe 1/2" shorter. Ha ha, OK, I also do not understand...What or why you do not understand! I corrected you on the size of The Brown Bomber. You found this heaviest weight, I said his prime weight, when he was trult great, was no more than slightly over 200 lbs., not anywwhere near 218. And gave you his actual height. What is it that you do not comprehend?
Whaddya mean partner? You said "to start"...The whole thing was about his size, there ain't nothing more. Unless you meant to contest that my post was simple & easy to understand-all I did was write in simple language about his height & weight! But how can you disagree? I linked Boxrec which LISTS his height, & his weight + his opponents in every fight. You did not know that, so did not check out the link? Here it is again: https://boxrec.com/en/box-pro/9027 It is consistent with what I have read here & there-such as what many people define as his peak, against Schmelling the second time: 198 & 3/4 lbs. As per what GregPrice99 asked you.... Although he was most primed for a specific opponent then, I would take him a few years later in 1942: after he recovered from what he escribed as too frequent fights, before the peak- sabotaging loooong WW2 lay off, but by 1942 he had faced a broad array of sometimes elite opponents, sizes & most importantly styles, so I would take that to be his theoretical peak. If you have any reason to doubt any of those weights, please tell me why. And link the evidence that anything there is wrong. Or confess that it may be mere ego that does not want you to admit error. But seriously tell me if you can contest any of those weights. With evidence of what you think he DID weigh then.
