Sam Langford vs. Roy Jones at 175

And if it did, the fighters of 1910 were much better "athletes" than the fighters of today if nothing else.

 

I forgot about Tunney, I agree. I usually consider Charles and Tunney heavyweights and don't really factor them in at 175lbs but they did fight wonderfully at that weight and both would have the style and chin to defeat Sam by points.

 

Over 15 rounds Jones wins a comfortable decision, losing the last few as he knows he just has to survive with Langford maybe troubling him once or twice throughout.

I just don't see him landing a huge mind detaching bomb on Roy. Maybe it could happen once in a handful of fights.

 

Langford didn't beat a prime Jack Johnson comfortably he beaten down depending on your source, so I have no idea why Roy has to beat a prime Johnson to make him better than Langford?

 

Langford acquitted himself well against a Johnson who many at the time were saying was the best heavyweight fighter. If Jones can beat that same Johnson, then I'd give him a chance against Langford.

I've heard that Langford knocked him down in round 2, I've heard that Johnson refuted this, then said it was true in his autobiography. I've heard Langford was battered about like a child. I've heard Langford made the bout close but Johnson prevailed clearly in the end.

What is it?

 

Either way, Sam lost to Johnson but he steadily improved after that match and was avoided. From what I've read and heard, Sam did lose the fight clearly, but did give Johnson a battle.

 

Pete Alexander and Christy Mathewson could probably be pitchers today, if Greg Maddux could.

 

He did improve, no doubt about that, grew a little as well.

 

Great debate. More than happy to just linger around reading the comments. One thing I will say is Langford on tape looks incredibly flat footed and stationary at times. If he was like that against Roy, it would literally be target practice.

I had not seen too much Langford tape, but after watching, the first thing i thought of was Roy's legs...

Sam Langford, as great as he was, would be dumbfounded worse than James Toney was.

Styles make fights as we all know... and from what I can see on video, Jones would have looked like an alien to Langford...

 

The same as when people compared Fitzsimmons to Jones h2h...

I don't think it is fair for Langford and Fitz, boxing was different then, they were both flat footed, fought way different than boxing of today.

Did they accomplish more in their era than Roy Jones??? absolutely.... But H2H, I don't think they stand a chance based on styles...

 

From what I've read Langford was completely dominated by Johnson

I believe Langford himself admitted (or was it his manager) that Johnson dominated the first fight

They were saying it was a close fight at the time though in order to hype up a potential rematch
