There was some debate on youtube as to whether this was McVea vs Jim Johnson or Sam Langford. I don't think it's Langford but it's worth a second opinion. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1Du1z8R_f8&feature=related[/ame]
I have a few full rounds of the action on film. It is Sam McVey vs. Jim Johnson. The fight was ruled a draw. While it’s dangerous to say who is better man on 12-15 minutes or so of footage, I was not terribly impressed with Sam McVey. Sam had a foundation like a building, and an intimidating build. I was surprised to learn how easily he could be discouraged. Once Jim Johnson hit him with a solid blow, Sam McVey went into retreat mode! McVey’s footwork was rather poor, though I do think he has some athleticism to him. His pattern of attack was to inch up in a straight line approach and club away with the left hook. I did not see a jab or a cross. Essentially McVey looks like a one trick pony. I must say Jim Johnson to me looked a bit better, and he was nothing special either. The thing on Jim Johnson was he was a solid man who took a good punch, and not one to be intimidated. I heard a rumor that the infamous Jim Battling Johnson vs. Jack Johnson fight has survived the passage into the 21st century. News reads suggest a questionable decision of the first all black lineal heavyweight title match. I believe Jim “ Battling “ Johnson was robbed, and might have been given draws because he was the not so famous” opponent “. One day, perhaps we can see him in a full fight and judge for ourselves.
That may not be Jim Johnson but I'm confident in saying that is not Langford: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxJOy_taioQ[/ame] youtube.com/eslubin
i agree. mcvey was more of a brute from what we see here. it's not hard to see why the smaller langford had the best of their fights.
Cyber boxing zone lists Battling Jim Johnson as 6'3 and 220 pounds. Boxrec has him at 5'11. This cigarette card has him listed as 6'1. This content is protected In the footage he appears to be about 5'9
Johnson was not willing to give Battling Jim a re-match. Langford, Jeanette, and others were. As to the broken arm ( it was a wrist bone ), most felt it happened late in the fight. Did you not read the report I posted? Take off your dog **** brown glasses ever now and then. Jack gave Jim a title shot because he was a joruneyman, and thanks to his influence of the situation was lucky to retain his title in a lineal sense due to a dubious draw.
