Sam Peter or 'What a hype can do'

Not unless Don King's judges had their scorecards filled out in advance - as seemed to often be the case in Ruiz's fights.

Peter is no great talent, but at least he had some power. Ruiz had no boxing ability to speak of - which is he had to cheat by holding excessively and faking "low blows" to "win" fights.

 

Ruiz was far from a great talent but he was a lot better than Peter ever was. It's a shame so many of Ruiz's fights were spoiled but he did have some talent.

Prime for prime Sam Peter KO's John Huggy Bear Ruiz.

 

A steroid-filled Toney beat Ruiz. A shot Toney deserved to beat Peter.

I'm not saying Ruiz was a good fighter - Simply that he was better than Peter, which he clearly was. At least Ruiz could throw straight punches.

 

Ruiz has no more boxing ability than Peter - which is why he had to cheat to "win." And his connections with King let him get away with it.

I will give Ruiz one thing - he was a brazen rules violator. And good actor when it came to getting bogus low blow calls. Of course, knowing that King'd refs would look the other way helped.

 

He had a better jab, threw better combinations, had better footwork, was a better body puncher, had more head and upper body movement, cut the ring off better, block punches better, slipped more punches - Seriously, what did Peter have that made him as good as Ruiz? Obviously he had pretty heavy hands but ignore that and just look at the technical side of it. What technical abilities did Peter have which made him as good as Ruiz?

Both Ruiz and Peter were always trash but I'd give the edge to Ruiz.

 

He didn't have any. And his power was way overrated, he never came close to KOing any fighter with a decent Chin.

 

After Peter's bludgeoning of Williams, Sykes, Wiggins? and his 3 questionable KDs over Wlad, it appeared that the Nigerian Nightmare had hit the big time.

I don't know what his purses were or how he earned that first shot vs Wlad(other than his raw power, which at the time appeared to be Wlad's nemesis ala Sanders).
But once he tasted 12 rounds of competition vs Wlad and beat Toney and Maskaev it looked to me that Peter had made it. Methinks that he had thought that himself. Years of training and HARD work, and he'd finally made it.

Then, he became americanized. Fast cars faster women, and fast food. WHO NECKS, WHO NECKS. Pride and money.

Having won the belt, I feel he became comfortable with his ability to simply slug it out and stop his opponent. He never really changed his technique for the better. He simply continue in his stalking and swinging style which has always led him into defeat against crafty fighters with a grill or solid D.
I agree, Toney probably did enough to win that first fight, but Sam was the agressor in a rather ugly fight.

When Sam beat a couple more journeymen, ala Rock, he got the nod when he was the only man with the heart to fight Wlad after Potvetkin ran crying to his Teddybear.

He came in focused, and sharp, and was doing things we'd never seen him do before. He was throwing combos, and bending at the waist in a defensive posture. It appeared for 3 rounds that Sam Peter had rediscovered his hunger.
But alas, this was a NEW Wlad as well, and Wlad with his boxing genius, figured it out, adjusted, and put Sammy right back into the old standup slugger he had always been. Game on, and KTFO.

Can't figure why Sammy came into this latest fight at 259. 235 was a much better weight for him. But from here he can only become a gatekeeper, a contender, or a journeyman. The first 2 pay better, and offer another shot at a title. But if he doesn't focus on boxing, listen to his trainers, and give it his all, he'll become that guy that beats the Maddalones and Sherwin Williams of the division whilst getting stepped on by the Fury's and Potvetkins of the game.

GTFO. Sam Peter's boxing technique is non existent. If you think otherwise then you have never seen him fight, simple as.

 

Absolutely. He stopped Williams with a punch he threw without looking, glass jawed and ancient Maskaev, and knocking Wlad down three times. That's all his power consisted of.
