Yes, he was no doubt a fan of Sam Peter at that time. So was Teddy Atlas, in 2005 he compared Peter to Joe Frazier.
Nah, i always thought Peter was a crude slugger who threw clubbing punches. He has never been anywhere near Fraziers level. Thank for another bump there pal!! :good
He had power but was sloppy. He put guys away by clubbing them all over their head, rarely finding the chin. His left hook when delivered with stealth was his most dependable for producing single punch knockouts, but he often just went wild, banging guys on the side of their head until they were helpless. He was very erratic, he could box well in spurts but at the drop of a dime, would go into sloppy clubber mode. The Toney rematch is probably his best performance from a techincal standpoint, he looked like a motivated Ray Mercer in that one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao_AvEvjhkI
Eddie chambers said Peter is undoubtly the second hardest puncher he's ever fought after Wlad. I asked him myself
He had serious power, but the two rabbit punch knockdowns don't count. So you are wrong, he only scored one knockdown in their fight
In terms of Peter having power, he did, as he should have, being a seventeen and a half stone athlete. Was it exceptional? Possibly. Could he translate that into explosive punching? No, not in general. While he could get away with wild, clubbing-style punches, he looked a very powerful puncher. But, as he needed to get a little bit more refined, the power of his punches seemed to be less; he just didn't look comfortable trying to shift his weight behind a straight punch. I think it was the Jeremy Williams fight, in which Peter threw a left, where his fist, I'm guessing, travelled about 270 degrees around him, passing through several states, en route to Williams' chin and beyond, before coming to stop. With 240lbs-plus behind it, it's going to look powerful. And, for poor Williams, it really was.
James Toney and Marion Wilson both said Peter was the hardest puncher it their careers. By the way, Wilson fought Ibeabuchi, Briggs, Rahman, McCall, Golota, Mercer, Maskaev and many other heavy handed HWs. Past prime Peter KO'd Nagy Aguilera easily, whike hard hitters like Washingthon and Breseale couldn't even drop him. So Peter's power is serious. But Peter has poor skills so he rarely finds opponents chin, more often he lands to the back of the head:yep
Thats the thing, there is a difference between being powerful and being a great puncher are two different things. I have no doubt Peter was a more powerful man than say Joe Louis. But he doesnt come close to being as great a puncher because he doesnt have the same sense of timing, distance or speed.
Actually, Peter had better technique than Frazier, a sturdier chin and more power too, being way bigger than the little cruiserweight Frazier was. And also, contrarily to Frazier, Peter had two functional eyes :deal
