Ike is overrated on this board....i think he beats Peter but he doesnt OWN Peter in any fashion....just like Tua, Peter is a big, strong heavy with a good chin and Ike would struggle with him....im only giving Ike the edge because of his punch output, which is much more than Peters....Ike SD Peter
To be fair, Tua and Ike are both better skilled in technique then Peter is. Also, it needs to be said. As special a fighter Ike was, it's very likely we never saw the best version of him. He would have gotten better as a pro as his career moved on.
It wasn't just me that spotted it then Notice the "fighters get over-rated when they retire" comment too? In other words we must show more respect to the active fighters because they're obviously better than we think....I wonder why :think
Wow... you are really running a double standard here in your posts. Ibeabuchi and Tua are much more alike than Peter and Tua. Ike had NO outside game, Peter actually does. Peter also has more power than Ike did... and comparable handspeed. I would say that Ike was a much better inside fighter, and Peter is a better outside fighter. Ike vs Tua looked like two twins fighting. Just because Ike happened to catch Byrd as Byrd was beating him, doesn't mean that he is so much greater. Tua was outboxed by Byrd just like Ike... Byrd was just smarter by that time, and didn't put his back on the ropes. Byrd hadn't really fought anyone up until the point he fought Ike, and was rather green himself. By the time that Byrd fought Tua... he had already fought Ike, Vitali and Wlad. He already had learning experiences and fought a smarter fight. You talk about Sam not being able to "knock out" Toney. What does that have to do with anything? Who the hell does knock out James Toney? If you haven't noticed, the man has a GREAT defense, and a GREAT chin. Ike Ibeabuchi wouldn't have knocked him out either. However, Peter clearly outboxed Toney, where Byrd clearly was outboxing Ike.
If you recall correctly... the going theme with Ike was that he was already getting worse. Which was the excuse for why he looked so awful against Byrd before catching him. Ike's ONLY sparring partner for that fight (yes he only had one), said that Ike hardly ever even sparred before the fight. That coupled with things like the 13 month layoff that he took after the Tua fight were clear signs of a flash in the pan going straight down the tubes. Another talented fighter who wasn't mentally built for the long haul. Clearly, that was the case in the end.
Agreed. This is also a possibility. Maybe. He may have also gotten whupped when he stepped up left never to recover mentally. Knowing what we know of Ike, this theory isn't farfetched. Not saying thats what would have happened, but its plausible.
Prime for Prime...so that would be Peter with a Peter/Toney II type performance and IKE with a IKE/TUA performance. IF that's all were going by, then IKE. Anything could happen though.
What leads you to that conclusion? Knowing that Ike went the distance with guys who weren't even ranked in the top 50... and then knowing that Peter has NEVER been stopped, even at the hands of Klitschko who pummeled him... what would lead you to believe that they both change their stripes for this fight? Why all the sudden does Ike knock out someone far higher ranked than he has had ever fought... and Peter get knocked out by someone who doesn't just blow through his opponents? When we know that he went the distance against someone like Wlad, who is known for knocking people out, and punching power FAR more than Ike? This is the sort of hasty decisions that I am talking about. Sam Peter is actually the WBC Champion. Yes, we know that he isn't a complete fighter, but Ike sure as hell wasn't either. Ike had just as many downfalls as Peter, and even more... Peter is FAR more mentally strong than Ike.
It's probably because taking Tua's shots for 12 rounds pushed him from being unstable to completely looney. I think it's more likely Ike got a little brain damage from that fight, but yet people on here still think he hadn't peaked yet...:think As for this fight, Ike could've won a slim decision because he was effective against shorter fighters with that high workrate. Peter still would've landed plenty because Ike threw a shitload of wide shots and had no jab. It wouldn't be near the outclassing many are predicting.
