The WBC heavyweight mandatory contender is Vladimir Virchis. Look for him to take the title from Sam Peter. Virchis is very underated on this forum. His only loss was by MD to Ruslan Chagaev.

Peter and his team will avoid Virchis as long as they can.

BTW, Virchis vs. Wlad Klistchko would be a compelling match.

Peter vs Virchis is a decent slug fest fight. Should be good and hard to pick a winner.

Virchis has the edge in skill and speed. Power is about equal and so is chin. Conditioning would be a big advantage for Virchis.

Peter better start improving that defense if he's going to fight a puncher like Virchis.. especially if he's going to get rocked by the McClines and Maskaevs of the world.

Agree. His wide open style is perfect for the tall hard hitting Virchis.

Sorry, but it seems to me that you've never seen a Virchis fight.

Peter has a much higher workrate than Virchis. No way Virchis can win on points. Peter has the advantage in speed, too. I know it's hard to believe that there are guys that are slower than Peter but Virchis is one of them.
But Virchis has insane power - enough to know Peter out cold. He knocked out Robert Hawkins with a single jab; Hawkins went the distance with Peter. And Virchis seems to have an iron chin; Peter's chin isn't as bad as one could conclude watching the McCline fight but Virchis certainly has the advantage here.

Doesn't sound as though Virchis is underrated on this thread :D

I haven´t seen Virchis so I wouldn´t really know much about how he´d do against Peter. But from what I know the winner of Virchis-Gomez will be the mandatory, so Virchis will have to win that one to get to Peter. I could see Gomez outboxing both fighters to UDs, but then again Gomez is often unmotivated and undisciplined and might just get KOTFO.

I do think you are right in assuming Vitali Klitschko will not fight Peter at all. He´s too busy running for mayor of Kiev and too injury prone.

I thought Juan Carlos Gomez was his mandatory.

Virchis has a good punch, but he's not the KO artist that some might make him out to be. His best wins came via decision, and frankly I'm not sure that he's ever beaten anyone of terribly high quality. Additionally, he's nearly 35 years of age, and his workrate is not all that impressive. Peter is much younger, and has been proven against a better list of fighters. Neither Wlad nor Maskaev could put him away when they had him in trouble, and I really don't see Virchis bringing anything to the table that those guys didn't. I feel that Virchis is a better choice for an opponent than Vitali Klitschko at this point, but wouldn't bet on him taking Peter's title.

I disagree - IMO Virchis is even slower than Peter but he has a better chin and probably better power.
I think Virchis would win by ko

I think Peter would win a decision (ca. 117:111).

Virchis deserved the decision against Chagaev but Chagaev's mother was dying and Chagaev didn't sleep the night before the fight so I don't know how to assess Virchis' performance in this fight.
And Michael Sprott deserved the decision in their encounter. A world class boxer shouldn't lose or be in hard fight against Michael Sprott.

In September, Virchis and Gomez will determine Peter's mandatory.
Gomez should win a clear decision (118:110 - 120:108) but Gomez had stamina problems in both fights against McCall (especially in the first one) so a Virchis win (KO) can't be ruled out.

No he shouldn't. Only fools thought that Ruiz won and guys that didn't watch the fight.

    Good post,

Yeah I've only seen virchis fight a few times, but I've never really been impressed by him. He's very slow, very uneventful, and seems to be going up against mainly aging fighters who haven't done much as of recent. Weather he loses to Gomez, or just squeaks by him, I don't see this guy becomming a champion.
