Young men do consider this. In light of Sam Peter's performance in two fights with "uncle" James Toney, what would be the likely outcome of a fight between Sam and a prime Larry "the Easton Assasin" Holmes?

Is this even worthy of thread space? Larry vs a caveman like Peter? Larry would box him to a stand still and KO him mid to late. Peter is a nobody.

I don't see the current version of Sam Peter being a problem at all for a peak or even sightly past prime Holmes. Hell, I'd even give a 42 year old version of Holmes who beat Ray Mercer a 50/50 chance at taking a decision. Peter has some power in that right hand, and make no mistake about it, Holmes was vulnerable to big rights, but Peter is just too slow, flatfooted, and limited to expect to land regularly enough on Larry.

Samuel Peter is 27 years old, and seems to be improving, so there may be time for him to become something better than he is. But, as it currently stands, I'd have to rate him on par with some of the lesser acheiving alpha titilists of the 80's, and probably on the lower end of the list at that.

42 year old holmes imo is a clear favorite over peter, holmes always had a good chin, so the only likely outcome is a clear ud. after all prime mercer would school peter.

Holmes would puff his face up for 12 rounds, jabbing him from the outside !

He wont get any better. Its a myth that his improving. If anything since turning pro his got worse. His weight has gone up, his condtioning has got worse and his still not even capable of basic fundamentals like the straight right or even a stiff jab. Peter doesnt listen to anyone.I dont know what on earth his trainers work on when he prepares for fights but its pretty obvious from Peters performances that he simply doesnt listen or isnt capable of what his trainers are asking of him.

Yeah, I think the Holmes who schooled Mercer has a pretty good chance of taking a decision over 10 or 12 rounds. Mercer was in better shape than Peter, had a better jab, and possibly more power or at least the same.

Sam Peter has the makings of a good fighter, if only he'd polish up on some basics, and lose some damn weight for Christ's sake.

The Goat Herder would be walking into jabs all night and Holmes had a very very good chin.

Holmes wide wide UD or maybe late stoppage on cuts

    WHO NEX?

He certainly doesn't seem to have very good comprehension skills. When asked after his win over Maskaev if he plans on fighting Wlad, he couldn't even seem to answer the question. He was kind of all over the place.

true he's still young (if that's his real age). i'll give peter some props for imo significantly improving between toney 1 and toney 2. But I don't really think the progress has continued.

Just for fun, I calculated his average weight over the last three years, and he's coming in on average at 249.77 Lbs per fight. The best he's ever weighed, or at least recently was against Wlad back in 2005, at 243 Lbs. The longer he waits, the harder that weight is going to come off, and he's not getting any younger. Peter is squandering his potential in my opinion.

peter will always hover around 250 now. he is surrounded by gangsters and imbecile trainers. i think he will get knocked out in his next fight be it against vit or virchis. jc gomez would box his ears off. he just doesnt have the consistency needed for long-term success.

this is what i think too. he won't improve that much at this point b/c he believes his hype. the mccline fight should've been another "wake up" call (ala Toney I), but he looked pretty crude vs maskaev.

    Sadly, you may be correct.

He's one of the best 20 something year old fighters that has come around in a long time, other than Povetkin, and he's wasting a potentially good career. I don't think that Vitali will beat him, due to his age and inactivity, but a good number of other fighters would certainly have to be favored over him.

What's frustrating, is that it wouldn't take much to make him a better fighter, other than touching up on basic fundamentals, and maybe dropping 10 or 15 Lbs, but for whatever reason, he doesn't seem to be making any progress.

I don't think Peter loses to Vitali....I think Vitali is gonna be waaaaaaaaay too rusty to do any sort of damage. WHO NEX should win that one with ease.

Assuming Povetkin ever gets around to Peter, I'd give him a tremendous shot at beating WHO NEX and maybe even STOPPING WHO NEX.
