3 weight champion in Muay Thai. He garnered massive respect for fighting 6'0 135lbs Dieselnoi; probably the most formidable Nak Muay of all time and a few weightclasses above Payakaroon. Samart went the distance. Sadly, only a jovial spar between the two when out of shape years later is available.

Unbelievable defensive savant with magical head/upper body movement. He was also as natural a fighting man as you'll ever see.

His hands were better than most Thai's, as were his brother Kongtoranee, who like Samart beat a former World champ' in his boxing debut (Samart=Netrnoi Sor Vorasingh, Kongtoranee=Payao Poontarat) and went the distance with Roman and Khaosai. As for Samart, he was ****ed at the weight by the time the Fenech fight came around. And he still took a drubbing.

Also, Payao Poontarat was the top amateur My2Sense was thinking of I think.

Samart fought exclusively under Muay Thai rules before giving 'International' boxing a go.

or was the 30 1/2 year-old Lupe Pintor 54-8-2 (41 KO's) and 125 lbs.
'shopworn and disinterested'.

Only 1-month earlier, in December 1983, Lupe Pintor at 132 lbs. was stopped
(L KO 10) by 'American Mid-South Junior-Lightweight' - Billy 'The Kid White 14-1-0 {8 KO's}
in a 'non-title bout'.

The 'rumblings' were, that Lupe Pintor was 'shot'.

I watched this fight last night...right away I thought Pintor looked lethargic and slow. Definitely not the same man as before. He was certainly past his best.

That's not to discredit Samart though, he did what he had to do. Knockout looked legit.

Sadly some have forgotten very quickly just how talented and destructive Jeff Fenech was.

Even though Fenech caught Carlos Zarate late and past his best, Zarate was humble in defeat conceding he thought Fenech would have beaten him near his peak.

 

Yep, at his best he waqs a monster that would have given Gomez a hell of a fight at 122. A lot of people remember him from the first 2 Nelson fights although his best work was before then. Zaragosa, Payakaroon, Callejas, Villasana...dominated them all and just as often as not with a broken hand

 

There has been a fair amount of Fenech discussion here lately. Did you guys read those threads?

 

Yeah, everyone with a brain knows how much of a beast Fenech was.
