Don't bother with people like Jaa. Check out Somrak Khamsing (who won medalled in boxing as well), and Sagat (no not the street fighter character). Also Saenchai.
My 19 y/o son loves Saenchai and is constantly watching this on a monthly basis or so it seems lol This content is protected I came across this one after you started this thread, I thought it was pretty cool This content is protected
He was very talented. I dont know if its true or not but they said he didnt really train for Fenech and after he lost he was so disgraced he joined a monk monestary. i think boxing was alot more money for him and alot less damaging .Thai kickboxing is brutal in both training and fighting.
Background stuff as in 'behind the scenes'? I'm pretty sure Samart was not as serious about boxing before the Fenech fight. He had become a musician (yes seriously) and was boozing etc. Apparently he also had a bad weight cut, and lived in a monastery for a time after the bout due to his performance.
He’d been a model and playboy and a drinker even in his Muay Thai prime. Bad weight cut + arguably the best H2H super bantam of all time are the reasons for that loss. And even then Samart dropped Fenech early and made a good showing before Fenech drained his gas tank and beat the Hell out of him. Perhaps Samart might’ve made a better showing if he was in peak condition, but Fenech was perfectly suited to make someone like Payakaroon look bad: relentless, not without skill, hard as nails. The monastery was because the Thai mafia were out to get him and being a monk made him safer and allowed him to hide until it all blew over. And he likely won them their money back by fighting top level Thais and beating them with ease.
