I remember reading about this back in the day and being shocked at the result. First time watching it though. KO was brutal. Thanks for posting.
One fight removed from the Jimmy Paul thrashing. When you lose it, you’re done. I don’t think it was any physical issues with Arroyo, I think he just kind of gave up on the whole thing after losing his title. The desire and focus just left him. I understand he went on to become a cop in the Youngstown, OH area after boxing. Good for him. He didn’t really need boxing, and you have to need it in order to really excel at it.
Sammy Fuentes was a dangerous fighter and tough as nails. You never knew how he was going to show up or what he was going to do. Kinda like Freddie Pendleton.
Always loved Sammy Fuentes. Took on anyone, gave 100 % and so fun to watch. Always came back from awful losses (L Ko 1 Pendleton+Kostya Tsyu, LKo 5 Juan Nazario, L ko 2 Frankie Randall+Rodney Moore, L ko 9 Roger Mayweather and Decisiones to Charles Murray, Frankie Warren, David Kamau and Angel Hernandez) His run on winning the Forum light-welter tournament was epic. Destroyed one time touted prospect Vince Releford in 2, destroyed undefeated future World title challenger Santos Cardona 2 as well, took out the dangerous John Montes (who kayoed Freddie Pendleton in 10) in 7 and then dropped recent World title challenger (vs Chavez) twice to get a controversial draw. They rematched and he dominated the fight to win the title on points. Gave a spirited challenger to Chavez (L KO 10). After six more losses his career looked finished but travelled to Britain to take on the Greek Warrior(Andreas Panayi) and utterly outclassed the slugger for some minor title which got him in the WBO top ten. This got him a vacant title shot for the WBO title against the capable Fidel Avendano who he destroyed in 2. His 1st defence was against the teak tough Hector Lopez who had just given Kostya Tszyu his toughest bout (L 10 whilst Fuentes had been destroyed in 1 by Kostya). Sammy dropped Lopez (1st time I think) in the 1st and won an underrated classic on points. Unfortunately he travelled to Italy and Giovanni Parisi took his title and his career nosedived again but what a fun warrior to watch at his best. This content is protected
Sammy Fuentes vs Frankie Warren, who do you think won that fight? Because from the comments, Panchito seems to have a rough time. I'll try to watch the fight later after finishing the Akira Yaegashi vs Pornsawan Porpramook fight
Haven´t seen it yet, I know it was a war. I have set of Fuentes fights to watch: all the Forum tournament fights, Lopez (again, also a hugh Hector Lopez fan, gutted when he died), Warren, Arroyo, Tony Martin,Marvin Garris, undefeated Liasu Braimoh (14-0 who never fought again after a 5 rd ko loss to Sammy who was coming off 3 straight losses) but always busy over term time (I´m a teacher) but term finishes here (Spain) in about a month so hopefully then. Love to hear your thoughts (and Wladimir) on Fuentes-Warren
Checked this out a few years back. This is what I wrote: Frankie Warren v Sammy Fuentes Round 1: 10-9 Fuentes Round 2: 10-9 Warren Round 3: 10-10 Even Round 4: 10-9 Warren Round 5: 10-9 Warren Round 6: 10-9 Warren Round 7: 10-10 Even Round 8: 10-8 Warren (The ref deducts one point from Fuentes for a low blow. The announcers didn't mention it, but he clearly is deducting a point on the video) Round 9: 10-9 Warren Round 10: 10-9 Warren Total: 99-92 Warren (actual scores are 98-92 twice for Warren and 95-93 for Fuentes) I would not discount that score for Fuentes because this was very tight and I can see a score going the other direction. Warren slathers Fuentes with punches but Sammy picks off a lot on his arms. If Sammy was busier or got off those ropes, he would have had better success. Still, a good fight.
