Great fighter, Sammy. His CV at lightweight shits all over lots of more heralded records. As has been saId before, he was unlucky to be sandwiched between Leonard and the trio and his best work being readily available on film doesn't seem to have helped him. Nor the brutal loss to Singer.
I enjoy watching him from a skill standpoint, but his record shows no marquis kayos unless you consider Johnny O'Donnell and Joe Azarella as big deals. He was a worthy champion in his time, but he was very cautious in defending his title, choosing to defend it only once per year during his four-year reign. In other words, he didn't go out of his way to clean up the division. His defenses against McLarnin and Canzoneri were noteworthy, but he later lost to each of them twice later on. If ATG has any meaning at all, I don't think he quite makes it. But it is a defensible argument for anyone who wants to make it.
Glad you are getting some replies I tried a thread like this a few years ago and the response was pretty underwhelming. Trained by Blackburn and possessing a great jab he was a masterful boxer with a good resume. "The Rockford Sheikh". Wins over Mclarnin Fields Terris Canzoneri Kansas
