Imagine David Tua with a bit more height, lightning fast hands, a jab... And even more serious dedication issues along with yo' yo'ing weights that would make Butterbean proud. Guy was a golden gloves and national AAU champion, and from what I've seen of him he really could have been something. If he wasn't 40 to 50 pounds overweight he more then likely would have slaughtered a unbeaten Andrew Golota rather then having him stumbling around the ring like a drunk. Also, Golota very may well have saved himself from losing that fight by biting Pou'ha.
The guy could really bang! I remember watching his fight with Golota live on the USA network's Tuesday Night Fights. That was a sloppy, action-packed fight!
Yeah, he had immense power. Not only that, fast hands. Very, very few heavies with that particular combination.
I think you might be overdoing it a bit in your appraisals. He lost to some mediocre and or aged fighters. He was missing far more pieces to the puzzle than he possessed.
I'm not saying he was going to ever be an ATG but he had potential. You'd agree with that at least, yeah? He had proven power, a prove chin, proven fast hands. The way he performed against a peak Andrew Golota when morbidly obese makes you wonder what he could have done if he was serious.
This is pretty obscure but does anyone remember his fights with Frankie Swindell? What happened in the draw? I'd like to get copies of both if anyone has them.
I remember SP and expected more out of him. He had very good skills and power, he didn't seem real dedicated to his craft, leading to his weight gain. Needless to say he didn't have the best chin in the world. I saw him vs Golota, if i remember correctly Golata was beating his ass, SP caught Golota, hurt him, Golota bit him, then Golota went back to beating him. He kinda disappeared after that fight, only to resurface later with HBO. He blew his HBO chance by getting stopped by Jesse Ferguson, his chin let him down again.
