Could Jerry counterpunch Sam into a stoppage in the mid rounds? Or does Sam's raw power break through?

On the surface it certainly seems like the man who bested Earnie Shavers, Ron Lyle, Buster Mathis and a resurgent Floyd Patterson should beat the guy who lost to Eddie Chambers. But I don't know if it would pan out quite that way.. I watched Wladimir Klitschko jab to no end against him in their first fight from 2005. Peter just kept coming after him and landed some very big shots.. Wlad was entering his prime then at the age of 29 and had been working with Manny Steward for some time.. He also stood 6'6", weighed 235 lbs or something to that effect and was very well conditioned... If Wlad had to use every trick in his arsenal and all his physical tools to barely keep Peter at bay, then I'm not so sure that the much smaller, lighter hitting, and cut prone Quarry would have much of a chance at prevailing..... Of course as mentioned, Eddie Chambers pulled off a decision over Sam, but checking the record, Peter was an uncharacteristic 265 lbs for that fight, so not exactly his best evening..

You have to figure Quarry wins. Even McCline and Maskaev were able to make Sam look pretty bad.

Quarry UD 9-3 with a knockdown.

Quarry is the better boxer with quicker hands and he had a tough neck himself.

Quarry handles Peter with his good power and solid chin, I like Jerry by a stop, Jerry had trouble with speed which Sam did not possess in abundance

In order to pull off a stoppage over Sam Peter, you had to be an unusually big and powerful guy like Robert Helenius or a Klitschko Brother... Even then, it took many rounds of heavy punching before he'd finally fold. It's all well and good to say that Quarry would use his masterful counterpunching techniques to catch peter on the way in, and make him miss every time Sam tried to unload... But that doesn't always work out. Wladimir has one of the best jabs in the division's history along with a powerful right, great conditioning and had one of the greatest strategists of all time in his corner.. He still barely got away with that win and took a fair amount of punishment himself.. James Toney, even in old age and blown up from a lighter weight class was still arguably as skilled or more so than Quarry, and lost. Jerry might very well win some of the early rounds against Peter, but I don't think he could stop him from coming.. Take into account that he was also both cut and knockdown prone and it might make for bad night... Quarry is a top 100 heavyweight of all time from a legacy standpoint, where as Peter doesn't make that rank.. But I don't think Jerry's legacy is going to help him much when being in the same ring..

Toney won the first fight in my book.

I had ringside seat fro Quarry-Mac Foster-Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers and Joe Alexander, Quarry had power for a small heavyweight but he was good against those slow hard punching guys and could bang with the bangers, Jerry had trouble with speed and his mind and this took place vs Ali and Frazier but Jerry had no fear for the guys that came to him. Peter for me had power (not Great) was not a boxer but a pressure guy, solid but I seen him rocked and dropped, Vlad fought cautiously in both fights,Quarry would not...I don't see anything that Peter has that the guys mentioned above did not do better....Quarry would also switch up with a body attack like he did with Foster and Lyle and this would break Sam down

Quarry is too small and frail. He wins a few early rounds in a classy offensive manner but Jerry, for all his revisionist glorification, ate punches regularly and often. He was simply not a consistent or dynamic defensive fighter. And Sam, at his best, was not easily deterred or gassed. He possessed every bit the sturdiness that his brick shithouse physique suggested. He increasingly finds Quarry after the 5th and batters him senseless in a corner in the 8th.

quarry by decision or late stoppage , he is leagues in class above the nigerian guy, quarry fought a war against a peak joe frazier, and quarry could take shots from strong guys and huge punchers like shavers and lyle... quarry wins this one

There was always the possibility that Quarry would cut. That's the only way I see Peter getting a stoppage or winning at all.

A bigger guy who utilized the jab would have a much better chance of opening up Quarry around the eyes. He had trouble avoiding good jabs. I don't think Peter has the right skillset to offset what Quarry brings.
