Quarry by decision. Jerry too skilled for the limited Peter. If and old fat slob Jas. Toney could almost beat Peter, a prime Quarry would box his ears off. Peter is/was always susceptible to left hooks, Quarry's best punch. JQ knocks Peter down once or twice.
:dealquarry would start off good, build a lead and not relinquish it. In the 6th (a good round for Quarry mostly) he would really tee off, deck Peter a couple of times and the ref would stop it.
Quarry was the better fighter and I would bet some money on him......As a Quarry fan I would be worried though, Peter defnitely was a big puncher....
Again, Quarry was there to be hit and hit pretty often. That's not a good recipe for success against Peter. And Peter doesnt gas or get glassy eyed like Shavers. He does tend to find easy targers like Quarry.
In comparison with Peter he certainly was very good defensively..... But like I said, I would be worried about PEter“s power in this fight, no doubt....
Quarry did not get hit often vs pretty average speed guys like Peter, I was at ringside for Mac Foster who was faster taller and more fit than Peter, Mac had 24 KO's in 24 fights and Quarry dismantled him about the same way Red Roaster described the Peter fight going KO 6...I also seen Quarry handle Ron Lyle pretty easily, hurting Lyle and putting him on the defensive after wobbling Lyle and making him reel across the ring, Quarry then out boxed him, Jerry did not have legs like Walcott or Tunney but he managed to maneuver the big slow guys pretty well. In the Shavers fight he did not have to wait for Peter to Gas he just went into the mix with Earnie when Shavers came out bombing, I also had ringside for that fight. Quarry was a better fighter than Peter and he loved a guy that came to him. I always felt Quarry could upset Foreman and Peter is no Foreman, its all a matter of styles and a solid chin and a big pair of balls allowed Jerry to use his heavy hands against the Big Slow guys, body & head, works all the time
The question is not who is a better fighter. It's who would win. Jerry was not a good defensive fighter by both skill and intent, and often wrote checks his chin could not cash. The Peter of 04-07 era would land and Jerry would sit in there with him like a tough guy and eat the shots with increasing regularity, all the while becoming less effective. I do so love the talk of Jerry being a threat to Foreman. Quarry is so overrated. He was a good but significantly flawed fighter.
Quarry had a solid chin. He took shots from Shavers, Lyle, Foster and even Joe Frazier until his skin betrayed him.
The assumption that Peter is significantly better or more of a threat than Ron Lyle, Ernie Shavers and Mac Foster is highly questionable. He just isn't.
It wasn't the best defence but it's reasonable tight and he boxed on his toes with faster shorter punches than Peter's wide impotent sluggings. Quarry would land first and when Peter did land it wouldn't be more devastating than Lyle or Shavers. Peter is very strong but as raw as they come.
I would say he is the equal of Lyle, tho a harder hitter, and better than Shavers or Foster. I know everyone gets misty-eyed remembering the 70's heavies but they are mostly a bunch of overrated, inferior athletes to those that followed. Nostalgia is a powerful influence.
