7. Peter's power was extemely overrated. As evidence: -it took him six to TKO Oleg Maskaev, the chinniest champ ever. -in two fights he could not stop James Toney, a MIDDLEWEIGHT -his power wasn't apparent against Helenius, McCline, or Chambers etc. The made him look like a huge puncher by setting him up agaisnt guys like Jeremy Williams and other soft oiled eggs. He was a good puncher who had a solid chin before it got cracked. Undersized, undertrained, and no boxing skills to speak of.
Pretty much what was said. Iron chin til wlad cracked it and he had but not great power. His chin was by far his biggest advantage.
Physically strong? Maybe he was very powerful in a strongman contest sense. But he wasn't a powerful puncher IMO. Slow, crude looping punches aren't necessarily accurate and devastating to any elite boxer with a minimum of reflexes.
He was a good puncher when facing scrubs but when stepping up he couldn't apply that power effectively enough to have a similar effect. I wouldn't rate him as one of the better punchers at heavy. Strong guy no doubt but not up there with the best in terms of power.
I was just about to post both these statements. Had good power but poor means to apply it. And Toney said Merqi Sosa was the hardest P4P hitter
What was his best opponent he KOed? Maskaev? He had a Glass Jaw. Peter's power was very overrated he had no problem KOing the Class C and D opposition but when he stepped up to better competition the KO's stopped. Legit savage punchers can KO just about everyone they fight.
Every now and then Boxed Ears becomes serious and posts something useful I agree with this post of his. Peter had huge power if he connected, but most of the time he just seemed, to me at least, to flail away at empty space because he wasn't fast or accurate enough to land the clean shots that he needed to land.
Stupid post. Power is one thing, ability to deliver is another. Class C and D opponents just lacked the ability to slip his punches. Wilder I predict will be very similar, huge power in the right hand, but he will not land it against anyone decent.
When it comes to boxing at the elite level, having serious power is no good if you lack the skill set and tools to actually apply it. Having said this, Samuel Peter's power was quite overrated. He didn't KO anyone noteworthy in his career who didn't already have a questionable Chin -- he got the stoppage over Maskaev, but he didn't even put him down. Even Goofi Whitaker managed to put Oleg on the canvas... and for a 10 count. Not only that, but prior to his first meeting with Wlad, he (Peter) had faced no one of note.
Clearly he had power and I doubt it was overrated. Once he got to the top level his delivery hindered his ko's.
