As well as picking a winner, does anyone have any background as to why the two didn't meet?

Alongside Palomino/Cuevas and Pedroza/Nelson this is one of the most frustrating lack of unifications.

Serrano was "the man who beat the man" with a cast iron lineage dating back to Harold Gomes claiming the belt once Saddler had retired.

Arguello was smashing his way through a murderers row of SFW names and looking like a beast whilst doing so.

But alas the two never did meet in the ring, the belts remained fractured and the fight never came off.

Arguello would have won anyway, albeit by decision.

    Arguello wins clearly.

Not sure why they didn’t meet but I don’t think Serrano was unhappy about that - he knew he would have lost. I think Arguello was pretty much universally regarded as the No. 1 in the division anyway so it wasn’t a fight that needed to happen.

Yeah it just annoys me when 2 fighters like this don't fight to sort stuff out.

In a world of only one champion per world, Arguello never got there in this division, despite all he achieved.

I feel your pain. Yuh Myung Woo and Jung Koo Chang could’ve been one of the funnest fights of all time and a Korean super war… but alas a bandit named business reared its despicable head and mugged the boxing world.

    Arguello straight up massacres Serrano.
It would go rounds as Arguello is patient and then around 7/8th round Arguello lowers the boom.

This is about the way I see it as well, with Serrano getting off to a fast start before Arguello slowly closes in. Once the Arguello engine is revved, there is no way the poor Serrano chin holds up. Besides the poor chin, Serrano, for all his title defenses, has one of the worst reigns of all time. While Arguello was carrying the big freight defending against Escalera, Castillo, Chacon, Limon, Navarette (even his non-titles were awesome such as Boza Edwards), Serrano was avoiding everything with a pulse, defending against those WBA politicized '#1 contenders' who posed absolutely no threat.
