Fun little brawler. With his style and its liabilities, the yet unbeaten Colombian slugging machine probably won't achieve much beyond the top of the heap at domestic level in his adopted home base of Canada - but he sure is TV-friendly. His ceiling is probably a cross-province showdown with either 140lb power punching prospect Pier Olivier Cote or 147lb counterpart Kevin Bizier (both Quebecois) - and in both cases he'd be the underdog. In either case, fireworks would be a gold seal guarantee. Check him out... ...this February against Manolis Plaitis, for the welterweight title of Canada: [yt]Rsz-OlXMYpw[/yt] ...last October in the 2011 Canadian Round of the Year against Ahmad Cheikho: [yt]uYWZT740bVY[/yt] Prior to that, he participated in the Canadian FOTY in his draw with Tebor Brosch. He won his most recent bout last month, scoring a TKO to jack up what had seemed a questionable stoppage ratio heading into his meeting with Plaitis on boxingchannel.tv (then standing at a mere 22%). Something tells me that as he keeps to the ten-round schedule, he'll be hearing less and less decisions rendered by the judges. The way he fights, over those distances he's either getting rid of you or vice versa.
Watched him against Plaitis, real impressive knockout. I wonder how far he can go with the skills he has..
More like with the power and chin he has. :yep In the OP I mentioned two of the bouts that are really about the furthest he can hope to progress, IMO. I'd favor both Cote and Bizier to stop him...but also wouldn't be too surprised if he flipped the script. Put him in with even a Joel Julio or Oyewale Omotoso, though - let alone a top 20 ww - and he hasn't got much of a prayer with what he brings to the table.
Apparently, Vargas started out as a bit of a counter puncher, but quickly changed to a come forward swarmer when he was criticized for being boring during an early performance. Bit of a Columbian/Canadian take on Matthew Saad Muhammad's style trajectory. If he winds up achieving even a quarter of Saad's success, he'll be extremely fortunate...But if he keeps producing fights that are at least half as good as Saad's battles, we'll be the ones who are fortunate.
Good, solid pro.... Id like to see him box a lil more, but he certainly has power and determination, two very dangerous qualities...
It doesn't have to necessarily be mean-spirited to put a cap on someone's potential. There's a place in the sport for these 2nd/3rd-tier action hero types, who can still produce legendary battles without ever having any realistic world title aspirations. Imagine a Vargas vs. Provodnikov match-up? :scaredas:
