As it was Azumah caught Sanchez a bit off guard, not so much physically as mentally. Many still say it was as good as Azumah fought. I think at their best Sanchez comes in 100% pumped up and knowing and takes a close decision i'd think. I don't think he would stop the best of Nelson. Nelson's a great fighter.
I don't think Sanchez was at his peak yet either, he was only 23 when he died. What a huge drag.....I became a big fan after he beat my favorite fighter Danny Lopez for the 2nd time. When he beat Gomez the way he did, man that was amazing. I was pretty nervous before that one. What amazed me about Sanchez was he was so scrawny and friendly looking, and such a great figther, smooth boxer. Kind of like when I saw Joe Montana on the street. I'm not a big guy and Joe was thin and average looking. I think Salv.would have pretty much taken care of Azumah if they could have met a few years later.
I believe the prime Nelson would take it...the first fight was a learning experience for Nelson...and with that experience, he'd win fight #2...either boxing or slugging. He gave Sanchez all he could handle with only 14 fights and on short notice as well...BUT I'm not totally certain on that (short notice)....It's been awhile. Both were great featherweights.
Watching some Sanchez footage last night I was struck with how accurate his punch placement was,and how calm and collected he allways seemed,he must be one of the most composed fighters Ive seen.
One of his hallmarks. He was said to take something like 30 seconds rest to regather maximum aerobic capacity, or something along those lines, which is certainly believable given his incredible stamina. He was at his best vs come forward and aggressive fighters and i was interested to see if he worked out better ways to deal with other styles as he developed further, but unfortunately we know the rest.
Sanchez would have an easier time with a less aggressive, more measured, but still forward marching Nelson.
I agree, what allowed Nelson to have alot of success against Sanchez was his high work rate and punch output. Later on he became more measured and picked his spots. Sanchez was reduced to punching in between Nelson's flurries in the fight and couldn't get the counterpunching opportunities due to Nelson's aggressiveness. He wins the rematch easier.
Sanchez would have won, probably by 15 round decision. I believe Sanchez and Pep were the greatest Featherweights.
The only difference would be that Nelson lasts the distance this time, he ain`t gonna outbox Sanchez over 15 & he definitely ain`t stopping Sanchez. Sanchez beats him to the punch for the majority of the fight & holds his own whenever Nelson forces the exchanges, Sanchez was just a better boxer IMO. Sanchez W15 UD Nelson
