Do you think Wilfredo Gomez would fight differently and win, or are you like me and think it wouldnt make a difference and Sanchez still wins? Also isnt that kinda funny when you think about it that the only Puerto Rican who seems to see this topic in a sensible way without fanatical flag waving happens to be a trans woman? lmao!
Gomez was shot against Sanchez his legs got EVEN worse in his later career despite training out of a scientific sports facility to resurrect his career… @cross_trainer something you might be interested in looking at is Gomez’s latter career where he got involved with interesting space age stuff…
Hard to say man,but just like what other's said, Gomez started to become a dumb slugger at this point of his career(maybe not as dumb as I've say before, but still slugger),no way he beats Sal the second time.
I can't see him beating Sanchez in a second fight. Sanchez used his legs so well and gave so many angles. As was mentioned already, Gomez changed his style after the first fight to a more pure slugging approach, either through necessity because his legs were not what they had been or because there was some stubborn streak in him where he felt he had to prove his machismo after losing to the Mexican. Probably a bit of both, but for sure the former. Gomez is difficult to rank as a featherweight. His tenure there was not only brief, but the only three decent opponents he fought there were two ATG's in Sanchez and Nelson and the guy with perhaps the greatest chin in history in Laporte. Difficult for me to dismiss him there and simply say, "oh, he lost his power at 126." Anybody would have mixed results against that trio, regardless of how old he was.
What do I know, I thought Gomez would win the first fight. A second fight? I think there was a reason they didn't rematch. And Sanchez by another beatdown is why.
Sal was always in perfect condition and tended to fight to the level of his opposition. That's why he was on fire for Little Red I & II. That's really the tip off on how a rematch with Gomez would've gone. Sanchez was an active Champion who put in a lot of competition rounds. Let's face it. Wilfredo struggled with his weight while Sal didn't. Food wasn't Sal's vice, sports cars were. When Sal got himself killed in his Porsche 928, he was training for a rematch with LaPorte, which definitely would've gone the distance again. He'd go into a rematch with Gomez extremely sharp. I've got news for ya. I think Sanchez-Gomez II ends Wilfredo's career. Much better for Gomez that match never took place. Because of that, he was able to immortalize himself with the epic Pocket Manila against Pintor.
Sanchez wins again, perhaps it goes longer because Gomez might not be so aggressive early. Gomez already started to neglect a lot of the things that made him great but 1981, witness the angles and footwork in his first fight with Juan Antonio Lopez and his second fight 3/4 years later. His weight gains, hardcore lifestyle, and neglect to train as hard slowly took their toll. Stylistically, having shorter arms and height, he’d have to force the fight, because Sal’s footwork was better in 1981 and beyond so those angles a more vintage Gomez could create, no longer existed. Sanchez, I think was also punching harder and getting bigger by the time of his death too.
I think Sanchez would have a big psychological advantage, taking him out significantly earlier than the first fight. Sanchez was just too, ridiculously good.
Can’t see Gomez winning a rematch. He came in as a slugger and Sanchez’s skills and chin nullified and overcame him. Being less aggressive, trying to out box Sanchez, Gomez’s chances of winning become even less likely, though he might last longer.
