This is what I initially thought, but Coetzee had a good chin and Morrison tended to shoot his load in the first 5 or so rounds.

I'm pretty sure Sanders would beat Morrison. The difference in chins being the main factor.

I think Sanders would beat Coetzee but I'm far from certain. Sanders did zonk out a few times after trying to knock opponents out (Rahman, Vitali). However, both those guys punched quite hard. With a "soft" puncher like Coetzee, Sanders might tough it out to the end.

A Morrison-Coetzee fight has the same dynamics as the one above, but Morrison chin might turn Coetzee from a soft punchers into a fairly hard puncher. Morrison did scrap through a few times against tough opponents, however. This is the toughest one for me. If someone had a gun at my head I'd choose Morrison.

Morrison had a tremendous struggle with a tough but limited Joe Hipp who was a southpaw. Morrison won but suffered a broken jaw.

He also looked very shaky and had his knees buckled vs a tier 2 Russian named Valuhlin ( Spelling ).

Sanders speed, style, and power would get to Tommy. Sanders not only had the fastest hands of the bunch, his defense and footwork was also the best. He he had the edge on height and reach on both guys...I think.

Sanders never looked like a world beater. Not even when he defeated Wlad. He had no defence and could be picked apart.

Morrison was a far more complete fighter . Better jab, uppercut, defence- ducking & weaving, movement-side to side & on the backfoot and a left hook thrown to perfection.

The Vaulin fight was interesting. Vaulin was really just a cruiserweight but he made Morrison look horrible until Tommy got him with body shots. His movement and chin gave Morrison plenty to think about.

I wonder what became of Vaulin actually. I thought he showed some decent promise.

He looked great in defeating Cooper, Czyz and Cole. There was quite a lot of interest in building him into a major feature of the US scene. Don King himself proclaimed him to be the perfect formula for $$$. He had the goods just not the desire.

Morrison could be a very good boxer, underrated. But he had focus and stamina issues (as did Sanders)… Both were extremely talented but with significant flaws.

I shade towards Sanders but wouldn't lay a dime on this one. Sanders had much better footwork, and when in shape could move in and out of danger with ease. Still, fireworks. Would never put a dollar on this one.

I agree wholeheartedly :deal, Morrison was more athletic, a better all around boxer, and had more heart than Sanders, Christ the guy fought Joe Hipp with a busted jaw..
Morrison also fought better opponents, and looked in better shape than Sanders, Corrie often showed up looking soft and flabby with a beer gut..
If Morrison and Sanders had ever fought, I think Tommy would have knocked him out..

Morrison had a terrible chin though. He would be out like a light if Sanders landed something solid.

I actually pick Morrison to win this round robin. Sanders was as vulnerable as Tommy, got blown out early upon occasion. He kept his hand low and Morrison would have caught and crumpled him. Coetzee is the most well-rounded of the three, but he rarely impressed against top-notch competition. I think he has a good chance of beating Morrison, but if I had to put money down, I'd go with the more dynamic guy, which was Tommy Morrison.

Sanders biggest problem is he stuck with Cedric Cusher who was a grade B promoter, and hard a regional trainer from South Africa. Sanders was the star of the heavyweight explosion series in the 1990's.

Its not like Sanders had Don King and Eddie Futch! If he did, his career would have likely been better.

I agree with you, Sanders had better footwork, and defense over Morrison.. He also had the better chin and when he trained, better stamina.

Like you said Vaulin was a blown up cruiser with some skills, but not enough durability. He wasn't going any further. The fight I believe was on the under card of Holyfield vs Foreman.

When Vaulin shook Morrison up, I knew that moment that he had a suspect chin. Morrison's manager Bill Clayton should have known better to match Morrison vs Mercer.

    Yep.

And Vaulin's trainer tommy gallagher dropped vaulin immediately after the fight. What a record those Bill Cayton heavies have on the way up the ladder. trouble is, burial Bill was always matching his guy with a guy with 1 foot in the grave or a history of being ko'd but not exactly live bodies. Suspects would be a kind word. But it sure allowed them to get the results--which was the intention. On par with what you see with Wilder currently----a page out of Bill Cayton matchmaking. It works and certainly builds interest and a following.

As for the matchups, I think Tommy loses to both. Sanders within 2 because he'll get drilled with a straight as an arrow left clean. I don't think he'll even see the punch and certainly was not the kind of guy that rolls with punches with his head movement.

Coetzee outlasts him and gets him out of there the second half of the fight. Probably go w/ Corrie over Gerrie because of the tall southpaw thing. These bouts would have drawn 80k people in South Africa. No way Tommy wins taking his act on the road and having about 6 people cheering for him and 79,000 for the other guy.

Morrison, an interesting discussion would be 'was Morrison's chin worse than Herbie Hides?'

Anyway, Morrison was quite a good fighter he could punch and put his punches together nicely, however his chin was such a liability. A shame as he was an exciting fighter.

I don't know who wins this match up, but I think Sanders - in shape, may just do it.

    Sanders would comically knockout Morrison.

The more I think about it, the more this sounds reasonable.

The faster guy gets there first. And Sanders was great at following up when his guy was hurt.

Sanders had a weak chin too, he was KO'D in 2 rounds by someone named Nate Tubbs, and was blasted out in 5 by Hasim Rahman:deal....

Morrison in my opinion fought a lot stronger competition, and was a more complete fighter, his weakness was he drank and partied too much...
