There was nobody back then who wasn't getting hit by his jab either...just Sanders. The matchup is a question mark. If Wlad took a rematch back then, Sanders probably would've won.
I have to agree with this guy everyone was waiting on Tyson to get old. Meaning the new crop of heavy weights at the time. At one point Tyson had an open invitation for a challenger and Holyfield and a couple others stepped up and the Tyson went to jail. Tyson was tearing apart his competition, for people to say that a prime Tyson was not that good is a little crazy. Buster Douglas was a lazy fighter that woke up for one fight against a Tyson that was out of control in trouble and being screwed by Don King. Some people like to say he was a bully and scared fighter, yes and yes. He KO'd so many guys so viciously most was scared when they got into the ring. I believe if Cus had not died guy like Evander and Lennox would have had a little longer wait until the became champion.
12 rounds to end it with a grazing left hook that put Eddie to sleep. I don't see that happening much. This version of Wlad has enough experience with southpaws to know how to fight them. Sanders would have a very low punchers chance, he's probably getting knocked out.
You can blame Don King all you want, truth is. Julio Cesar Chavez was still wordclass even with Don King, Don King didn't ruin Tyson. That was Tyson his own fault
Sanders is a bad matchup for Wlad, but I wouldn't see Sanders knocking today's version of Wlad around the ring again. I'd give Sanders the puncher's chance, but would still have Wlad as the favorite. And LOL at those saying Douglas could beat a focused Tyson. The version of Douglas that Tyson got was about 2 levels above the version that any other of Douglas' opponents faced.
Interesting question, and opinions; First of all, i think that should be considered a not very well known fact of that match: that what really stunned Wladimir has been a series of unintentional headbutts from Sanders, that in some cases were even head-anvils, in the meaning that the Wladimir's head was between Sanders's hook and Sanders's head, thus amplifying the impact and the deceleration; the effects can be seen by the cut they opened in Wlad's face, and mostly the following day, when Wladimir's face showed some contusions that aren't normally generated by punches; Wladimir didn't fully recover from these headbutts, and the following round was the last; Additionally, it has to be said that this happened before having Emanuel Steward on his corner, and the trainer he had at time had literally no clue on what he should have done in the following round, in fact never talking about anything related; after that fight, Wlad changed to Freddie Roach and lately to Manny Steward; This being said, other factors could change the result of a rematch: Corrie was a southpaw, and at that time Wlad wasn't really experienced on southpaws; actually, to the contrary, he has faced something like 7 of them, if i'm not wrong; which is a very high number, giving him a lot of experience, expecially considering that there are famous boxers that never faced a southpaw in their entire career; This, in addition of the fact that his actual style is totally different to the one he had at time, and with his actual standing, mobility, and cold blood he could even going to Knock out Sanders, maybe in the later rounds; BUT i think that the more probably scenario is Wladimir winning by unanimous decision, due to the cautiousness he implemented in his game, and there still is the possibility that Sanders win in the only way possible, by knock out, even if surely not before the 5th round; There was something in the Sanders's unpredictable rushings and counter punching that made him one of the most dangerous southpaws ever, and probably THE one, in the heavy division. Additionally, he had the heart of a lion, and an iron chin; One last thing, that i find interesting: asked about this loss, Wladimir said in an interview: ""I only fell in love with boxing after those two fights I lost against Brewster and Sanders… It was very motivational. If I could change those things I wouldn't. Because I would never be the *person I am today, in or out of the ring, if I hadn't suffered those two losses." This i found really positive.... he went back to school and improved visibly with every loss. His losses are part of the reason why he is a top boxer now.
Who blamed Don King, you're a lost soul. Tyson let Don King change his life and his boxing career, who's fought Mike Tyson's fought. That being said Tyson was one of the best while training with Cus and Teddy, Kevin Rooney could have put him back on the right track as far as his fighting style. Tyson chose not to take that course, but was a terror for the heavyweight division. Only standing five foot eleven inches and fighting and beating guy 6 feet 5 inches and taller is a pretty remarkable fighter whether you like him or not. Guy's bigger and taller grabbing and holding on for dear life are the way most of Tyson in his prime, distance fight went. You can down play it all you want but the proof is there on film what he did to fighters.
Watch some old Tyson Film Eddie would have been lucky to go 1 minute with Tyson. Prime Tyson was simple seek and destroy, Cus kept him on a leash. That leash allowed him to become one of the best we would have the honor to ply his trade, once the leash was gone he reverted back to the street thug he was. His career went down hill from there.
Wlad is a far better fighter now (and far better than Sanders), but Sanders just happens to be exactly the sort of fighter capable of beating him. That's boxing. I reckon now Wlad would beat him and look good in the process, and quite likely he wouldn't get much credit for it. I'd never rule Sanders out though, he could definitely beat even the current Wlad
Are you telling me you cant see the difference between 1990 Mike and 85-88 Mike? The prime Mike who was an explosive combination puncher with un-natural speed defence to the plodding one punch artist with no defence.?
The post-Manny jab catches and inhibits Sanders from any line of attack. Quick, accurate, powerful, near impassable.
Wlad would always struggle against Sanders, who would throw bombs from all sorts of angles. I think it's possible Sanders knocks out any version. Wlad would always have a hard time controlling the distance.
