Round 4

Martín is doubling the right jab as he slides his feet backward, then firming up his stance and leaning in with the left cross before picking up his legs again. Hughes is menacing with the jab, not always throwing it but always keeping it pointed at Martín's face and halfway out the firing chamber, then dips his upper half inside and slams big left hooks into the body. Hughes landing the left hook frequently, and forcing Martín to give up ground, but also eating lots of light headhunting combos in counter.

Nick Halling wonders aloud if Martín's slouched posture and troubled facial expression on his stool might be ill portent for him.

 

Round 5

Martín is jabbing straight out into Hughes' nose and then converting his outstretched left arm into a smartly turned-over hook when Hughes presses in closer. Hughes jabbing or simply luging his way inside frequently, ramming his left shoulder into Martín and working the left hook in doubletime, upstairs & down - but Martín is able to catch him with plenty of counters at long range, and wriggling loose & escaping before Hughes can accomplish much up close. Great effort by Joe, working with what he has, but I think Martín has started sussing out that he's sort of a one-trick pony with that bashing hook and adapted.

Round 6

Martín is leaning back into the ropes and twisting around, slipping the clattering of shots Hughes is raining down on him: downward-slicing rights on the center line of his nose/chin/sternum, and big left hooks up top whistling into the side of the head and bicep. Martín able to make Hughes miss the majority of this stuff, but also too smothered to have any room to counter effectively. Round up for grabs in the final minute. Sneaky right hook on the body from Martín. Hughes showing a high left jab, and Martín flicks a few rights into his palm before ducking and tossing in a left on the body. Martín is dancing to his right, pawing with the jab.

Round 7

Martín is starting to really dig in with that right hook on the body, perhaps angling for a stoppage with it. Hughes is forced to back up, further amplifying Martín's confidence and bloodlust. Martín toying with Hughes with the jab walking in from beyond Hughes' reach and experimenting with how close he can get dropping in the left before Hughes can punch him back. Hughes grazes him with a right jumping in and Martín nods respectfully, making a mental note of it. Martín is slumped over to his left in a quarter-way crouch, putting backhanded right jabs up into Hughes' face and then smacking him across the lower jawline with a looping left. They clinch and Martín gets vicious on the break, yanking his arm loose from Hughes' grip and clocking him on the cheek with a hook. Martín takes a double left hook on the inside from Hughes, absorbing most of it on the back of his right arm, shrugging Hughes' fist away, then stepping out and using body-feints.
