Perhaps... but in order for this to be true Denver Ed would have to be capable to draw with Langford, Ferguson was capable. Ferguson was a tough crafty fighter with good footwork he wasn't a big stiff white hope who looked awkward. He improved each year for awhile, Ferguson went 20 rds with Johnson his chin was far superior to Denver Ed Martin. Skill wise Denver ed may have him beat its debate able. Denver Ed was one of the first fighters to control a fight with a jab. He had a nice piston jab going at his best with very long reach. His biggest win to me was when he walked right through Hank Griffin who had to be at least somewhat expected to win, Griffin was a bigger name before the fight happened, but Denver Ed had no problems. His stock was sky high after that fight. But that's a bit before 1909 for sure.

I can almost assure everyone Ferguson is better than you may remember..He's in a time frame where he gets a bit lost. He can in at weird angles and made it difficult to tell where the punch was coming from. That's almost the exact statement from Jack Johnson about him.
