Well he beat some worthy fighters most of which were champs at some stage : Elorde Famechon DeMarco Salas Zulueta he is in most people's top 2/3 at FW. Stay safe buddy.
Not too well versed on Saddler but I believe he iced Joe Brown in an over the weight non title fight. I know Brown was the 135lb champion at some point. Not sure when this happened. Still pretty impressive for a featherweight. Old Bones was a puncher himself.
His win over Teddy Davis gets underrated now, mostly because Davis was literally a professional loser. However, he went on this weird little run while Saddler was enlisted and actually grabbed up the duration title against the super Percy Bassett. Saddler came straight out of the army and met his duration champion, which I really like to see. Toyed with him too, just mauled the **** out of him. This content is protected
For a guy many brag about, only four replies? A lot think because he beat Pep three out of four that this puts him right at the top, I don't agree.
I asked Saddler this myself and he said his best win was Willie Pep the second best Willie Pep the third best also WP after a bit of provoking he stood very stiff and said his best win came in the gym he once KO’d Carmen Basilio
Saddler told me beating Pep just made him better then Pep not everyone lots don’t get how much things vary because of styles and also Willie was winning one before he quit
Duration champion Jimmy Bivins and Saddler used to play cards with Davis late in life when I was on the scene Bivins taught me how to throw the straight left 121 Archie Moores secret weapon he taught it to Bivins after there last fight
You'd probably get an equally modest response when asked about Pep, Wilde, or Jofre. Knowledgeable connoisseurs of Fly/Bantam/Featherweight are sparse and some threads get buried or overlooked.
Hi Buddy. I mean no disrespect to a great fighter, finding that hard to believe, the trouble I am having is that a FW ( albeit a great one ) can KO a welter/cum middleweight who was renowned for having a cast iron chin, to wit, full blown MWs the calibre of Robinson, Fullmer, couldn't even floor him, let alone keep him there !! and I would imagine they would have had sparring gloves on, and possible headguards, really....... stay safe amigo.
I don't agree that Saddler rates higher than Pep, just because he won the series vs him its not quite that clear cut. A few things Pep was in a plane crash and had serious injuries, and he was arguably never quite the same. Also one of Saddlers wins over Pep was on an shoulder injury in a foul filled fight, in which reports say Pep was actually ahead on points at the time.
“Body punches,” was Saddler’s riposte. “I could see in his eyes something was wrong but I didn’t think it was no shoulder."
