Supposedly one of the greatest punchers of all times. More or less dominated Pep in their series. An amazing record of 144-16. Among those losses many were SD losses, a handful of which he avenged via violent knockout, like against Flash Erode and Paddy DeMarco. Only stopped once very early in his career. Was knock to take it easy in non title matches, contributing to a large majority of his losses. Where do you rank him on a P4P basis? One of the great of all time? Anyone have any stories on him?
He was a proud proud man. Looked the same physically in the '60s and '70s as he did when he was fighting. Never favored his eye at all. I used to jog with him around Central Park.
Not sure on his comments on Pep, but there fights were perhaps one of the most foul fill fights ever witness.
Yes he was, Russell...at least on paper with Archie Moore. Hard to imagine two such strong personalities co-existing. He did love training amateurs at Gleason's gym. But it was his way or the highway. He shared one thing in common with Pep: as trainers, they couldn't understand that fighters couldn't do what they did naturally.
LOL, I think you are getting Sandy mixed up with Dick Saddler. Who he turned pro with and who used to train Sonny Liston. Sandy trained amateurs in the National Maritime Gym in New York before poor health prompted him to give that up.
In the book "In this Corner...!" it mentions he was there for Foreman's fight against Ali, among other times.
Saddler was a unique type of fighter. Saddler was a very rangy lower weight fighter who mixed old school stamina, toughness, grit, and some illegal tactics, with modern boxing skills. Saddler had very good power and druability too. I think he matches up well vs all styles. Saddler is an under rated and mostly forgotten fighter these days.
Sandy also said that though he and Pep were friend s,he was pissed off allways being referred to as a former Feather weight champ while Pep allways got the big build up,he said they never mentioned that he retired as Featherweight champ,or that he got the better of Pep in their series.
