Let's make this at junior lightweight...Arguello needs more experience than his featherweight fight days...He came into his own at junior lightweight...The man who had 'razor blades' in his gloves...for his propensity to cut and batter his opponents against arguably the most vicious featherweight ever, in Saddler. 15 rounds at Junior Lightweight. Who and why?
I thought this one was too good to let go...Arguello would have a small height advantage (which might not be an advantage in this one)...But would he have an advantage in power? By all accounts,Saddler was one rough, experienced, and vicious fighter...and powerful to boot. The gentlemanly Arguello was an extremely hard hitter whose power riveled....No exceeded IMO...his opponents as he rose in weight...How many times can that be said in boxing history? Problably not many...With the exception of Armstrong/Saddler, I can't picture a more brutal fight than this... Here we go....I feel Saddler would initailly take the earlier rounds and would stun Alexis on more than one occasion...He would butt, elbow, lace, hit and hold, spin, and effectively clinch to offset Alexis...Arguello, even as experienced as he was at junior lightweight, he would recieve an education from Sandy Saddler...Arguello would score in the early rounds as well...But Saddler's strength and aggression are winning it...I think Arguello would problably suffer facial lacerations under and over his left eye...due to Saddler's right hands and well placed head butts...How would you like to fight Sandy Saddler?...I wouldn't...no way... However, I feel starting in the eighth round, Arguello's power would have start to take a toll on Sadder...The body punching ' Exposive Thin Man' would start hurting Saddler's body badly...Arguello always concentrated on his opponent's body...as the brutality continues, Arguello is becoming slightly stronger and pressing the action more...But Alexis is not fresh by any means, the early rounds alley fight, has taken a toll on him as well... Saddler would be bleeding from the mouth and with have swelling around both eyes, as a result of Alexis' power... Down the stretch in the championship rounds I feel Arguello is still coming forward, both fighters are scoring devastating blows, but no one is going down...Arguello has the stronger finish, but Sandy won the majority of the earlier rounds...IMO the result is Saddler by SD...Two great fighters. Any opinions? Geez...with all this old stuff being dug up...I'm going to have to do a retraction! It's Arguello for the win!
Sandy Saddler is usually at 126, but he fought at 130, and I give it to Sandy with a knockout. Tremendous puncher. Alexis is the better boxer though.
I love the "oldtimers of the 1940s and I saw Saddler ringside fight. But in a fight at 130 pounds I pick the better punching Arguello to hurt Sandy Saddler badly and tko Saddler in a late round. Saddler looked like a preying Mantis long, lean and ROUGH, but he was not hard to hit, and Arguello at his best was a deadly combo puncher who would catch Saddler often and possibly tko Sandy...Maybe I'm predjudiced as Arguello was my favorite "modern" fighter in style and character...Alexis by late stoppage...
I see Saddler by decision in a rough go (although at 130 I could see AA prevailing … at feather Sandy is far too much for the Explosive Thin Man) because Arguello wouldn’t quit like Pep.
Arguello was as close to unbeatable as you can be at 130. Not sure if Saddler ever came across as good a puncher as Alexis so I go with Arguello in a back and forth fight probably by later ko.
