My breakdown on one of the best fights ever.

Thanks in part to the forum, @GlaukosTheHammer , and the IBRO http://www.ibroresearch.com/ I may have uncovered a mostly unknown chapter in the history of he sport. Which will in turn become a chapter of my upcoming book "A history of Violence" . I owe this community so much.

Thanks just for being here ESB.

My favourite fight of all time:thumbsup:
I'm the biggest morales fan, but I think Barrera nicked this one.

I thought so too personally. But a super hard fight to call either way. A split decision was certainly defensible and no scorecard was particularly out of line. Kudos to all involved. From the promoter for getting two great fighters together. To the Fighters for delivering such an incredible effort. For the Ref for not getting in the way or letting it get out of hand. And to the judges for doing their job in a fair way. It was a great event for boxing.

Rare indeed for 2 top fighters deliver this kind of fights.
Lots of the rounds are close as both took inventory not to be out done.
I thought Barrera landed the more eye catching punches, a tad quicker on the draw and more explosive. These I think sway the commentary and masses scorecard.
I certainly have no issue with the decision.

General opinion has changed to some strange revisionist history. In recent years a strong minority think Morales won, but at the time not just HBO but almost all boxing media and fans called the first fight the robbery it was. Barrera forced the action and landed more punches in at least six rounds, and with the fight being that kind of war neither was edging rounds on outside boxing or defence. At least 10 of the rounds were easy to score. Morales showed massive chin and heart to come back to outfight Barrera in spots and enough rounds to make it such an unreal contest, but through the significant majority of the fight Barrera pounded the **** out of Morales, not the other way around. Especially when it really mattered. Look, the fight mattered more than the result, the decision can't take away from how special it was and indeed the legendary qualities Morales showed, but saying it could've gone either way mischaracterises what happened. Barrera deserved the win.

I agree with you and totally understand that opinion. Robbery seems too strong a word here though. Yeah I had Barerra up a round but I can totally see why some body would value Morales work over Barerra's. God damn I can never get his name right.

I have just rewatched the first 4 rounds on my phone and gave Morales 1,3 and 4.
So I don't see it that much of a robbery. The close distance of the fight or when the fight breaks out in close quarter, favours Barrera, but when at mid range it favours morales.
If I have time I will rewatched the entire fight.

Great read, was like reliving the fight again. You brought attention to the skill that went unnoticed well. Despite fighting with hot passion and the baddest of intentions they both jockeyed for punching position brilliantly. Oh man, those body shots of Barrera.

They really did some beautiful work, particularly Barerra. But that is what your train for. To make the right reflexes so second nature there is no need for conchise thought in exchanges.

Same as I had. Not a robbery by any means but Barrera did the better work IMO.
