"Redemption Time" was a success for the Filipinos on the undercard, as Mark Dave Cereno Apolinario, Alex Santisima Jr., Vince Asuncion Paras, Abubukar Yanon and Reymart Grande Gaballo were all victorious in their bouts. Everyone but Apolinario scored a stoppage.

 

Three sets of national anthems happening - Filipino, Australian and Japanese.

Round 1

Takayama comes out aggressive, jabbing the hairline of Lu and working the body as he rapidly circles in close on him. Takayama scoring hooks around the guard. Lu being overwhelmed early, forced to shell up and twirl. Impressive footspeed and hustle from Takayama for a 41 year old - can he keep it up? Lu lunges in with a line drive lead right and eats a longer and more accurate one from Takayama. Big height & reach disparity for Lu, although his biceps and legs are thicker. Takayama is popping jabs into the face and belly and flitting from side to side at medium-long range. Takayama giving this kid a boxing lesson. 1-2 by Takayama.

Round 2

Takayama is pumping out hard straights fluidly with both hands. Lu picking them off and then chasing Takayama out of the pocket with counters springing up off his heels. Takayama is scoring at will with jabs and crosses, while Lu tries timing him with uppercuts on the inside. Lu loops a right up top and grazes as Takayama is pulling back from an attack. Combos to head and body by Takayama. Lu holds. Takayama triple jabs and forces Lu into the ropes with a left hook downstairs. Hard straight right on the sternum by Takayama, followed by one on the nose. Lu is desperately jabbing and uppercutting at him, usually a half-beat late. 1-2-1-2 by Takayama. Lu swats up top with a loose counter left hook. Messy exchange on the inside, both scoring some incidental leather. Lu knocked into the ropes by a right hand.

Round 3

Takayama is swarming and landing in multiples, hammering down on the cheekbones of Lu and then scything his flanks once inside. Lu holding and hooking with his free hand. NICE short counter overhand right by Lu, catches Takayama flush, best punch the Viet-Aussie has scored yet. Takayama puts out a measuring stick left jab a`la Wlad Klitschko, leaving it suspended in midair before abruptly drilling Lu with a right cross that stuns him. Blistering pace by Takayama, not letting up as Lu backs up, blocking and shimmying to slip what he can.

Round 4

Takayama down, slip. Takayama is still raining in jabs from different angles on the outside, and converting right hands over the top into uppercuts and then ducking and pulling away before Lu can give him a receipt. Takayama outworking, outpunching, and outmaneuvering the youngster - besting him in every aspect of the game. And by no small margin - much higher workrate, better accuracy, more damaging blows, and superior defense. Lu is maybe waiting for the old man to gas? So far his strategy is to just weather the assault and hold when he's able.

Round 5

Takayama still with no signs of engine failure, tossing out punches in bunches - headhunting with straights and hooking the barn doors of Lu. Lots of rough yanking clinches initiated by Lu. Big flurry by Takayama, seven or eight shots shoeshining into the face. Lu is using his powerful upper arms and elbows to crowbar Takayama off when he's lathering up heavy combinations, and then slamming into him for a momentum-stalling clinch.

Round 6

Takayama is unloading several straight shots at once into Lu's face between his thumbs, then hooking wide around his goalpost gloves. Lu is tossing left hooks up top and looping rights on the body staggering forward when Takayama pulls the rug out from under him and withdraws following a salvo. Lu wiping at his nose compulsively with his left glove, perhaps some blood in there? Could be sweat, or a bad habit picked up in the gym. Watch this space. Takayama is jabbing the body, bullying Lu across the ring. Takayama eats a counter roundhouse right and keeps bearing down on Lu. Takayama's arms are grabbed and wrenched in a tight lock.

Round 7

Takayama touching up Lu, but a modicum of zip finally seems to have gone out of his shots. Lu is whiffing big overhand rights as Takayama flurries, ducks, resets and straightens. Hard body shot by Takayama, with Lu acknowledging it with a nod and almost shrimping away with his back to his opponent instinctively. Takayama jabs Lu into the ropes, then plugs him with a hard pendulum right on the navel as Lu flops into him to hold. Takayama charges with a 1-2 and Lu meets him with an uppercut. Body jabs and cuffing ear hooks by Takayama. Lu getting nailed with 5-6 punches at once but marching in and landing the odd uppercut, to his credit.

Round 8

Takayama is diving in with a laser-guided right on the chin, then hitting Lu's sides with pinball paddles with either hand. Lu churning away on the lower chest of Takayama with uppercuts when he can. Lu now adopting something like a Philly shell, abandoning his peekaboo guard. It doesn't work too well; Takayama lands several unanswered blows and Lu holds, rocked. Takayama keeps spamming the right hand up top, but Lu has it scouted and is bending his neck and reaching down to grab Takayama's waist so the punches skim off his left shoulder. Lu down, slip. Takayama feints a jab up top and pokes Lu in the abdomen with a right hand from outside. Lu traps Takayama's right glove in his armpit until the ref pries them loose.
