Huge step up for LSC, even against a past his prime Mares, it was Mares initiating most if not ALL the clinches. LSC obviously showed he won't be easy to beat, he can jab too. Neither is a big puncher, but LSC has crazy stamina and seems to have good jaw, so it was a good action fight. Nobody was hailing this as the next Barrera-Morales classic. Just potential FOTY. It might of fell short, but it wasn't a dud either.
You hit the nail on the head, Chacal. Not all busy fights are exceptional and exciting. This fight was good, but not great. I was a little disappointed in Mares' performance. He came out well and then faded after two or three rounds. From then on it was a pretty dominant performance by Cruz with volume punching, fighting tall at range, not letting Mares come in. Mares looked genuinely hurt a couple of times, but Cruz just didn't have the power to finish him or even knock him down.
Funny, Barrera and Morales match what I was thinking of initially. Ok Mares and Santa Cruz is not as skillful as them, but they don't need to be for a great match to happen. Gotti and Ward comes to mind as an example.
The fight may not have been FOTY quality, but it featured good two way action and a number of heated exchanges throughout. Given their respective styles and skill-sets, it was probably about as good as we could have expected it to be.
Good fight and entertaining to watch and as others said not foty. Both lacked the power to make it more dramatic ala ruiz and ceja before it
It was a dam good fight and sides of Leo that people never gave him credit for came to light. He can box and showed that. Mares made it an ugly fight as much as he could because he knew he was in trouble from the word go. Leo worked his way through all that BS and that was intriguing to watch because he displayed a boxing mind. I like that. A knockout wasn't needed to make it an excellent fight. It was that.
