Santos Laciar is one of Argentina's most underappreciated & unheralded fighters and more importantly, champions. That's saying something considering the massive depth and berth of boxing history woven through the nations history. The diminutive even as a flyweight Laciar was a little workhorse of a fighter with a never say die attitude. He was a moderate puncher and usually relied on his tremendous activity and conditioning to see him through bouts.

Laciar was never stopped in a career spanning 101 bouts and 906 rounds. As a reminder, Ali fought 548 rounds, Roberto Duran... 821.

As an unrelated side note, I absolutely love the Japanese language art that Japanese TV stations used to, and still do, employ. So dynamic and engaging, even though I have no idea what I'm truly looking at. My eyes appreciate it.

Hozumi wasn't too good. And he got an undeserved second title shot against a past his prime Zapata in '86.

    Is Laciar in the IBHOF.

    If not, he should be.

I don't believe so, though I haven't gone out of my way to check.

He certainly should be. He ticks off just about every noteworthy box for admission.

I know his opponent isn't the greatest but there isn't a ton of Laciar footage actually available... even this bout, I don't recall ever being on Youtube before. Sometimes you have to take what's available.

He did beat Zapata and Roman.

He also beat former champs Herrera and Cardona.

He reigned for three straight years with a version of the 112 title than gave it up voluntarily to move up to 115 lbs, where he drew with and then beat Roman.

He did lose later to Sugar Baby Rojas and in a rematch with Roman.

    HOF worthy in my view

It's a shame that he doesn't stick out of his respective era more because of the talent around his weight class in his own day being so solid. He's something of a forgotten man, as I've already said. You certainly wouldn't think that initially if you were to look at his record. Lots of names, noticeable ones.

Bump to place it above the award winning & thread of the decade, Patterson v Seldon.

Did you watch this one? I found a lot to like. I love Laciar's lazy metronome type head movement. Tick tick tick. He just keeps on shuffling into distance with the same rhythmic head movement again and again until he pins his opponent down.

Yeah, Laciar did have that rhythmic, metronomic head/upper body movement that had a lazyish appearance to it, he was a smooth, fluid mover. No real weaknesses to his game and very skilled with that stocky physicality, it's like watching Galindez in miniature with that signature Argentine movement/style. He could jab, move and counter off the ropes or attack going forward with slick, fluid hooks and combos. Splendid little fighter, his trilogy with the equally excellent Roman is essential viewing, or the first two are at least as Laciar was a bit spent by the third fight. He was a bit on the downside by the time of the first fight actually but was still very, very good imo.
