There is **** all talent or depth at 160. Pavlik is the number one because the division is so poor - why else is he fighting a guy that's most likely a natural 154 fighter for a MW defence? Abraham, whatever you think, has moved up to a division where all the guys are taller and most likely bigger than him. Where he'll have to challenge himself. Pavlik took on Hopkins because he thought it would be an easy fight - and that's all he's interested in. Pavlik should have been SCREAMING for a fight with Abraham. He wasn't. The Super Six is fantastic - it's got unprovens looking to make their names, it's got established, tested fighters looking to build their resumes and legend, it's got a damaged old pro looking for one last shot at the big time - it's got drama just in it's participants, not even the fights. I'd rather watch Froch go out on his shield than the the tame, **** poor effort Pavlik made against Hopkins.
The tournent only has a budget of 50mil so He couldn't have gotten the very best 6. Pavlik would have priced himself out if he was invited I expect.
NO.....Boxingfan ! Kessler on the same subject: I have big ambitions. I have earned good money before. But if you ask me whether I am in this tournament for the money, the answer is no. Let me tell you one thing: After the Calzaghe fight I would have changed my purse for a victory right away. Super Six is a great opportunity for me. I think this format will truly show who is the best super-middleweight in the world, and I am confident it will be me. I am grateful for getting this chance in a unique tournament which I think will be copied in other weight-divisions in the future. I know Andre Ward is a tough guy. But so am I, and I will give everything in that fight. I want to win the Super Six Tournament.
I think the tournament will be great fun to watch. It should produce some good fights, but please don't tell me you can't see that this whole thing was set-up for sauerland's two fighters to win. That's why the competition is less than top level.
The Ring's ratings have four of the six as top ten rated SMWs (Kessler, Froch, Taylor and Ward). Abraham is currently unranked as he hasn't fought at the weight (though I would count his trouncing of Miranda in the rematch, personally) but was no.1 at MW under Pavlik as the lineal champ. Dirrell is currently unranked. BoxRec rankings have all the Super Six participants in the top ten, even if the placement of them is daft. Four of those guys either are, or have been, titlists. That's an incredibly high level of competition in anyone's book. Ward is a future titlist by all accounts and beat Miranda handily in a solid display, and Dirrell's making a step up to world-class against Froch - he'll sink or swim, but that says a lot for him i think that he's willing to take the risk. I know you admire Pavlik, but he's pissing his career away in meaningless fights against Lockett, Rubio and Williams (it's a meaningless fight that, if he loses, completely devalues him as a fighter and, if he wins, is just him beating up on a guy who's only proven effectively and WW). These guys are actually daring to be great. Sauerland were instrumental in the creation of the tournament, bring their two biggest stars on board - of course they want them to win it, but every guy they're both going to face has a chance at beating them. It may not be 50-50, but in three fights, each of them will have faced better competition than Kelly has in his last three fights.
Damn sight better than the **** poor level of competition at 160! (Although give it a year or two and it could become interesting again with guys like Pirog,Golovkin,Korobov, that canadian who's name escapes me and Daniel Jacobs. At the moment however, it sucks!) As for Sauerland, well Kessler strikes me as the best at 168 anyway so who knows?
Published: Thursday, July 9, 2009 By JOE SCALZO Vindicator sports staff NILES Kelly Pavlik said hes willing to wait his turn to fight Arthur Abraham, but hes not willing to fight Felix Sturm for $1 million. Pavlik, the WBC and WBO middleweight champion, had been slated to fight Sturm, the WBA champion, on Oct. 3. But talks hit a snag when HBO offered just $2 million for the bout, a significantly lower amount than the two fighters had been seeking. If weve got to split that, I wasnt going to take a fight for that, said Pavlik, who signed copies of his new book at Thursdays Scrappers game. Hes got the WBA world title. Ive got two titles. Somebody better throw some more money out there. Sturm, a German, has emerged as the leading candidate for Pavliks next bout due in no small part to Abrahams involvement in Showtimes upcoming super middleweight tournament. This content is protected Yeah, but Im going to take care of business at 160 [pounds] first, he said. This content is protected This content is protected
Based on beating Kolle? Come on, that proves nothing. He hasn't fought a legitimate contender at 160. Arum stated that he offered Pavlik several fights and that HBO wasn't interested, so he could take less money and defend at MW or fight Hopkins. He took Hopkins because he thought he'd be able to beat up an old man who looked gassed against Calzaghe late on and get good money for doing it. His language and that of his trainer the week of the fight underlines that they thought Hopkins was past it - proved the little **** wrong, didn't they? Abraham fought Miranda in the US to help build the hype for a Pavlik fight. Pavlik had just thrashed Lockett to pieces to satisfy his mandatory. He chose to fight Hopkins - a fight no-one had asked for or wanted, except Hopkins. Abraham was struggling to make MW and saw, quite clearly, that Pavlik didn't want an actual challenge - he just wants to cash out. But never actually agree to fight them.
