So, I've honestly only seen Alvarez fight once, the Cotto fight, and was already all but sold on him. So last night I youtubed his name to see another fight, and the Euri Gonzalez fight came up, and I was really shocked at what I saw. From what I saw, Gonzalez dominated the early rounds. He was being more active, he was the agressor, he threw way more punches, and effectively had Alvarez on the ropes. Now, to be fair, Alvarez's defense was effective off the ropes, and not too many punches went through, but it's not like he was following that up with effective offense either. Only after about the 7th and 8th round did things really start to change, with Canelo being more agressive, backing up Gonzalez and landing nice right hand counters. But, it seemed too little too late, as Gonzalez was well ahead (in my mind) going into the championship rounds. Then Alvarez connected with a solid right, wobbled Gonzalez into the ropes and threw punches. It was stopped. But to me it looked like they were just looking for an oppourtunity to give Alvarez the fight, because while Gonzalez was obviously hurt and did wobble, he managed to keep his hands up and slip a punch on his way to the ropes, then had his hands up and was moving his body on the ropes. The stoppage was one of the fastest I've ever seen, I thought it was bs. They should've given Gonzalez way more credit, and a little more time to either go down, and recover, or recover off the ropes. It was way too fast. But here's the real reason I posted, I want opinions. Am I not seeing something? Was Alvarez winning this fight? Was the stoppage a good one (meaning was it looking out for Gonzalez's health because he could not continue, or was it to give Alvarez the win because he'd lose a decision)? Am I way off? Personally, I think it's telling that this Mexican broadcast, for 6 or so rounds, was showing Alvarez on the ropes blocking punches just to show that none were making it through, because it had nothing else good to show for Alvarez. Oh, and this Euri Gonzalez guy went on to win 3 more fights after this, so he's now 20-1 with this being his only loss. He's not a young guy, but maybe he deserves a little more attention? I watched the Gonzalez fight live, and remember thinking Alvarez was pretty much dominating outside of a couple of early rounds. And Alvarez has often been a slow starter. If you want to be impressed, check out his destruction of Luciano Cuello from last night, which was truly an awe-inspiring performance.
i would have to agree with you. I just saw the fight against cuello on youtube and all i could say was daaaaaaaaaaaamnnnnnnnn
Round 8 was a truly dominant round for Alvarez. Round 9 could have gone either way. For all the posturing he was doing, Alvarez ate way too many right hands, and didn't land too many of his own. Seriously guys, this isn't an Alvarez circle jerk. If you're gonna post something, answer the questions I presented about this fight. Thanks.
He's only 19. He has never looked as bad as JC Jr for all the hype around him and was able to keep his composure against an older slick undefeated fighter. This is great experience if you ask me. About the stoppage, I dont see anything wrong with it. From 4:00 and on it was total domination, Canelo was landing that right hook non stop, @ 5:30 Euri was dazed and wobled im pretty sure it would have ended with Euri on the floor.
I know he's 19, I was never downplaying him or mentioned JCC Jr. His past few fights have proven he's the real deal. I was merely asking about this fight and what people thought. I would have to disagree about the stoppage still. Dazed and wobbled, he was still slipping punches and had his hands up. He was given no time at all to recover and fight back. It may have well ended with Euri on the floor, but I think the referee stole from Alvarez a chance to make a statement here with a real stoppage. I still see that as a hometown stoppage, at least at the point it was stopped.
