Here is ESPN's top 10 rankings at Light Middleweight

    1. Miguel Cotto
    2. Sergie Dzinziruk
    3. Saul Alvarez
    4. Cornelius Bundrage
    5. Erislandy Lara
    6. Paul Williams
    7. Carlos Molina
    8. Vanes Martirosyan
    9. Austin Trout
    10. Pawel Wolak

4 Names immediately stand out to me as opponents I want to see Alvarez fighting NOW.

    1. Cornelius Bundrage

    - Trained by Emmanuel Steward, has boxing skills, but is primarily a slugger. Guaranteed action packed fight that will end in a knockout.

    2. Austin Trout

    - American prospect, good boxing skills, would be a perfect fight for Alvarez to see if he truly has a great all around game against a boxer. Oh and he has a W over Saul's brother. Perfect revenge, Water vs Fire fight.

    3. Vanes Martirosyan

    - Another American prospect. Good all-around fighter. Saul could really get to this guy, in a fight to me which would end up being a possible tale of 2 halves, with Vanes taking the beginning of the fight and Saul finishing it.

    4. Erislandy Lara

    - After Lara's victory over Williams. This would be a perfect fight for both fighters. The winner would likely be considered either the best or 2nd best fighter in the division.

Seriously, every single one of these fights is far more appealing then seeing Alvarez whip on non-contender Gomez who's been beat on too many times already and is really a guy who lived off some high profile shot fighters like Gatti and Castillo.

No doubt I would like to see Alvarez retire this dude, but its not a necessary or in any way intriguing bout.

Your right Mw Any of those would have been better, but canelo is very active, he needs to step his game up in 2012

Hell no, they're gonna continue feeding canelo these bums and when he faces an elite boxer he will lose he may even lose to a B-level fighter, the way feather-fisted Matthew Hatton was able to tee off at times is a cause for concern, his first loss may resemble that of David Lemuiex or Fernando Guererro...

I'm not impressed 40+ fights been a pro like five years, I know he's young at 20yo but aspire to be great, I don't think he's gonna be any better than he is now....so throw him to the wolves...

Wonder why bundrage is your first choice? Is that mw the boxing fan speaking or mw the bundrage fan speaking?

For the record I completely agree, this is a huge joke of a fight and I honestly can't believe anyone would justify it.

I'd like to see him vs cotto ideally, with lara being my second choice followed by molina and then your boy k9.

No way is Arum going to put Cotto in there with anyone who is a threat. He'll keep Cotto in house earning money off him as long as he can.

As for Bundrage, I wanna see this fight because of the styles. Bundrage is an old Veteran 38 years old, a slugger, and Canelo should win by KO. But it'll be an exciting fight while it lasts.

I mean why are people avoiding Cornelius? He's just a club fighter essentially right? He'll fight everybody.

I'm ok with the fight, I think its going to be fairly entertaining for a while but, like most of Alvarez's fights, we already know who is going to win. It is absolutely time to see Alvarez step up.

we all saw this coming,i keep saying that if Canelo wasnt ready to fight the big names( i do think he is ready) why handled the title to him?
Many people here underestimate him, he beats and lose to anybody at 154- but GBP is afraid of seen him going down and his stocks as future ppv seller will suffer a hit.
We must understand that undefeated doesnt mean much- JCC Jr is undefeated and Pacquiao,Martinez, the K brothers are not, still who ranks higher?
If the kid isnt ready, give up that belt and let the big boys do their thing, if he is, get in the ring and defend it with whoever earned the chance.

Yeah it's hard to gauge what cotto has left, I mean foreman, mayorga and margo, doesn't exactly set the world alight but unless he gets in with a young un it'll be hard to say.

I do quite like him actually, when if landed that final combo against powell and screamed at him "i got this baby" quality character on him, in his latest interview as well "the greats like tyson and jones all unified so that's what I wanna do" for a man like him to believe he can get to that level, gotta respect him. Plus I think he gets a bit underrated: beating ouma, spinks and powell should rank him a bit higher than he is imo.

Nobody is "avoiding" K-9 due to fear, Bundrage is one of the most vulnerable champions out there. He has heart, is awkward, and is physically strong, but lacks skill, has a really ugly style, is older, and has a weak chin. He is a champion right now due to the luck of facing a shot version of Spinks. Gomez would beat him convincingly if they fought each other. The reason Bundrage isn't getting fights is because he himself is holding out for money fights while not being a big enough name to warrant them, and because of his grappling style not being very appealing.

Gomez isn't the best opponent from the perspective of what he's accomplished at 154 lbs, but he is a relative step-up for Canelo, and unlike most of Canelo's opposition to date, Gomez will go in there, will throw a lot of punches, and will come to win, he will not pull a Ryan Rhodes and be a punching bag for 12 rounds. He has pretty good all-around boxing skill, a good chin, and will go out on his shield to try and win the fight if necessary. And ultimately, we haven't seen anyone consistently put heat on Canelo, he's usually allowed to fight at his own pace without taking much fire. Hence the fight promises to be an entertaining, all-action affair.

though its a lackluster fight, any fight w/ Canelo is spectacular...
he DOES need to step it up - the promoter needs to stop protecting him and let him TRULY SHINE

    It's a PPV undercard fight, it's reasonable.
