Saul Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin

He has Canelo beat in those areas, but Canelo has plenty of power himself and chin. His footwork is a little lacking, but Canelo can fight going backwards better than GGG

 

Sometimes I wonder if people even believe to what they say, or they are simply not able to notice the difference while watching certain boxers.

Where did Canelo display some world class skills? He displayed an "ok" skills against Trout, but nothing great and that fight was in fact very close. The only notable opponent he clearly outboxed was Angulo, a slow come-forward fighter with a good chin and absolutely no defense. Not to mention that it was a middleweight fight as neither of the guys is even able to make 154. Canelo is a pure example of an overrated boxer with without pedigree to back it up. His boxing skills are okay, but like I said nothing special. His movement isn't on a world class level, and his footwork isn't good either. It takes only certain fighters to make him look very good, and those fighters aren't the skilled ones obviously.

I would love to see Golovkin fight Canelo, but I'm very aware that the chances of that happening are minimal, because Canelo's managers want to market him as much as they can with taking very small risks, even at 154.

Talking about skills, Golovkin is at least a level above Canelo and I believe that many people can see that. First of all, if Golovkin wasn't skilled, he would't have such a sucessful amateur career, defeating all those good boxers like Bute, Anre Dirrell etc. Second, it's very obvious that he hits very hard and often goes to the body as it's a very good way to materialize that kind of advantage. He has an excellent accuracy as well as timing, and that alone is a very big weapon which majority of the boxers don't have, including Canelo. Golovkin's sense of distance is also on a very high level, while Canleo's is average. Obviously we are taking about the different level of boxers here. Talking about opponents, I see nothing special in what Canelo has done. He defeated Angulo, which Golovkin would destroy easily in a couple of rounds, and he barely defeated Trout, also an opponent which wouldn't be considered serious for Golovkin. I'm not saying that Golovkin defeated some amazing boxers either, but I doubt that Canelo would walk through those opponents undefeated, and even if he did, I doubt that he would do it without difficulties, while I have no doubt that Golovkin would have easily give a serious beating on every single of Canelo's opponents.

Anyways, we all know that resumes don't win fights (despite some people trying to bring that up in order to say that Golovkin's resume is "bad" and "that means that Canelo is better"). Golovkin is a true world class fighter and Canelo isn't, simple as that. In my opinion, Golovkin defeats Canelo easily and puts a beating on him.

 

Golovkin kills him. Hopefully figuratively.

 

Canelo has shown better defense, counterpunching, accuracy, speed, and versatility than GGG against better opponents. Canelo can fight off the ropes, he can fight in the pocket, he can come forward with ferociousness and fight on the backfoot.

If they fought, tbh I would pick GGG to win, but I'm making a point that people are overrating GGG here and downplaying Canelo. GGG is a skilled aggressive power puncher, but most elite fighters would vs that opposition. It's very silly of you to say Canelo has no accuracy and timing when that's exactly what he used to beat Trout while being out thrown.

All big punchers look phenomenal at a certain level. Put Pernell Witaker and Edwin Rosario vs the same C level opponents and people will be proclaiming the praises of Rosario.

However, I would still favor Golovkin. No result would really shock me.

 

Where in his post did you see that? I read that he said Canelo and most other fighters don't have excellent accuracy and timing.

If he's saying Canelo doesn't have excellent timing and accuracy, then I'd disagree. If he's saying he has no accuracy and timing, then that's silly

 

Canelo can fight in the pocket, boxing on the backfoot, stalking an opponent, counterpunch, defend multiple ways etc.

GGG is very adept at coming forward and that's all he really needs in sense. But Canelo is still more versatile

I see that as him fighting his and his opponents fight. You can't blame GGG for fighting the way he does because he's doing exactly what he wants in there. In time we'll see what he's really capable of doing but I wouldn't argue that Canelo is more versatile as you say.

 

Golovkin does all that except fight off the backfoot with the lean-back. Instead he uses footwork to put himself back in position to threaten with his offense. Fighting on backfoot like that would be a boneheaded move and not make use of his power. It would just be giving people free shots at him, threat of retaliation is enough to limit his opponents options and limit their output.

For a pressure fighter, GGG actually doesnt get hit much and gets hit clean even less. Occasionally he will get popped by an unleveraged reaching shot, which he pretty much ignores. This causes some people to say he has no defense.

 

Idk, I've been debating with myself on that one. They use it for different purposes. Canelo's is faster, but GGG's isn't telegraphed at all and very heavy handed. Both use it consistently too

 

Man, these threads and some of the posts that follow them make
me wonder how much longer mankind can actually sustain life.
Listen, a GGG/Canelo fight is a seasoned confident Man vs a
****y protected kid who can only fight if you're right in front
of him. Angulo is a punching bag who's tough........end of. GGG
has ring generalship like no other in the sport, a calmness like
no other in the sport, and POWER like no other in the sport.
This fight would be a massacre, and I don't want to hear about
their proposed sparring session. That means fuc.k all. Canelo would
never fight again after a GGG bout and don't expect Oscar and Richard
to EVER EVEEEEEEEERRRRRRRR put ginger boy in with GGG. Ain't gonna
haaaaaapppen. Never in a million years.
