Oscar De La Hoya, while presenting the hundred thousand dollar check to Canelo, grabbed the microphone and announced that due to their impressive victories he was also handing out an extra $25,000 bonus to Marcos Rene Maidana, Leo Santa Cruz, and Daniel Ponce De Leon - probably to save GBP some face after the rich kid who doesn't need the money wound up getting it. (thanks to the stupid idea to have it set up as a text message poll, which of course always boils down to a popularity contest rather than having any basis in merit...)

I'm glad for Leo, Daniel and Marcos to get the bonus. Yes, they all deserve it. I was merely teasing Oscar over the fact that he probably only did it as a P.R. stunt and not out of genuine care for any of those fighters.

 

Round 1

Alvarez sticks the jab out and rips Lopez with a right to the face while leaning through a 1-2. Lopez jabs him in the neck and swoops to either side. Jab to the body by Lopez ducking in, then circling away. Nice combination downstairs by Lopez, slicing a very crisp hook against the abdomen. Alvarez parries a jab with his own. Alvarez comes forward as Lopez fades left, then moves forward with his guard up. Right to the body and a DOUBLE HOOK by Alvarez! Lopez is weaving side to side with his gloves up, trying to stick a jab. Alvarez stalks and places his jab on Lopez's forehead. Lead right by Alvarez. Another, whipping Lopez to the ropes. Lopez jabs the body. Double jab, cross by Lopez - caught on the forearm as Alvarez turns it vertically to catch. Big slapping left hook by Alvarez leaning away from Lopez.

Round 2

Solid power combos by Lopez! Right hand and left hook to the face! Lopez coming forward!! Jabs to the face and body setting up power shots through the gloves. Big left hooks to the body. RIGHT HAND to the face, left hook to the body by Lopez. Alvarez jabs his way off the ropes. Very stiff left jabs by Alvarez. Lopez is rocked back by the jab, BIG right uppercut by Alvarez. Lopez misses a high right hand and gets hooked in the body. Flush jab to the face by Lopez. BIG STRAIGHT VOLLEY to the face by Alvarez. Lopez lands a right hand to the gingers, and a left hook to the ear. Alvarez takes small steps forward, carefully maneuvering his guard around and peering out at Lopez. Carefully circling, Lopez tries to stay off the ropes while watching and popping a few tentative jabs. Alvarez marches him down and hooks him in the body, hurting him and almost trapping him on the ropes. Lopez squeaks by and keeps the jab flowing. Alvarez catches him changing direction with a jab to the nose. Alvarez throws a light uppercut as a diversion and then digs a BIG LEFT HOOK TO THE BODY, AND DOWN GOES LOPEZ! He beats the count and the bell rings to save him as Cortez takes his fists in hand to check his responsiveness.

Round 3

Alvarez is driving Lopez back with jabs to the face. Lopez circles left and pops his own jab out at Alvarez. BIG RIGHT HAND BY LOPEZ stepping in, and HE GETS DROPPED AGAIN! ANOTHER FLUSH LEFT HOOK TO THE BODY, KNOCKED HIM BACK AND OFF HIS FEET!! Lopez sits for a moment, listening to Joe Cortez count, then shoots up. Alvarez moves in to finish, patiently working behind the jab and looking for a monster right hand. Lopez refuses to let him, ferociously battling off the ropes! Lopez can't get out of the corner, but is throwing the kitchen sink at Alvarez. Hooks to the body and jabs to the face by Alvarez from outside. Lopez's face is badly cut and swollen. Jabs by Lopez, circling either way. Alvarez walks him down with jabs, and a BIG 1-2 as Lopez momentarily lays on the ropes. Combination by Lopez stepping left. Right hand by Lopez. Alvarez jabs and ducks a wide left hook. Lopez overreaches with a right hand as Alvarez backs up. Right hand by Alvarez.

Round 4

Lopez is circling to his right and jabbing as hard as he can to give Alvarez pause, and then sweeping out in a hooking pantomime with the left between jabs. Alvarez works his way in and drops a HUGE right hand on Lopez's face. Lopez has to hold on briefly. 1-2 to the face by Alvarez chasing him back. Left uppercut to the chin by Alvarez as Lopez circles. Big left hook by Lopez, sticking a follow-up jab and backing up. Alvarez advances with a double hook to the body. The second is very low!! The first hook was on Lopez's name on his trunks, and the second was well below all the letters. Lopez doubles over gasping in pain. Cortez offers him time to continue. Lopez paces a few laps from corner to corner, taking about thirty seconds to recover. Time in. Lopez dives forward, gloves up at his face but not protecting him from Alvarez's jabs to the top of his head, snapping it back. BIG HOOKS BY LOPEZ, standing his ground. Jabs by Lopez backing up to the ropes. Alvarez moves in and CHOPS HIM DOWN WITH A LONG COMBINATION TO THE HEAD AND THE BODY, A COUPLE OF POWERFUL DESCENDING RIGHT HANDS TO THE KISSER PHYSICALLY FORCING LOPEZ TO HIS KNEES!!

Round 5

Jab by Lopez and Alvarez bends his neck and jabs past it. Hook by Alvarez. Flush jab by Lopez stepping in. Lopez circles to his left, hunched forward and coiled tightly as he tries to keep his back off the ropes. Alvarez pushes him against the ropes and RIPS the body with left hooks. Lopez fights his way off with a right hand up top. Another left hook to the body by Alvarez. Combination by Alvarez, right hands up top and left hooks to the body. Lopez squats and jabs the body but gets smacked into the ropes by another powerful combo. Lopez floats his jab and shows an uppercut, trying to build up to another rally off the ropes. Alvarez sticks a jab and stands in front of Lopez. BIG RIGHT HAND BY LOPEZ, flush on the jaw. Big left upper-hook by Lopez. Alvarez walks him back toward the ropes and eats a big right hand. Left hooks to the body and hammering blows to the guard by Alvarez, causing Lopez to wilt against the ropes. Lopez tries to fight off one more time but Alvarez is ripping the body with hooks and uppercuts. Lopez tries to hold but can't get his arms past Alvarez's punches. Lopez begins to crumble and Cortez is in!
