UliUli you have a short memory my friend, during Cotto's 140 pound reign, he did get criticized by more than a few folks for his level of competition but the reason why people did forget was because some of the fighters he did fight at 140 did well for themselves later on such as Carlos Maussa,Lovemore Ndou,Paulie Malignaggi and Ricardo Torres who all went on to win some form of a world title after Cotto beat them.

If Cotto really was praised/hyped more than Alvarez in the early half of his career than a lot of the credit should go to his fans who apparently did a better job of expressing their joy watching him. You can also thank Top Rank for as usual out doing Golden Boy when it comes to hype and building stars.

Canelo gets his hate because of all the attention he gets from accomplishing so little in the sport.

Canelo gets his love because he's Mexican.

Now tell me which is more wrong. His haters or his fans.

    Exactly....

When Canelo came up ,beating Baldomir i liked him.I predicted a bright future. But then the politics came to effect and he was handled a belt-for free.People waiting in line, busting their asses and this kid comes up fighting some welter-british brawler and gets the belt. And then,he doesnt fight the best to prove he deserves it.Why Gomez?why cintron? ...with a division full of talent and he is fighting blown welters and shot fighters?...i would think exactly the same if he was cuban. As a matter of fact, a cuban-Richard Abril, just was given an interin title. To me he isnt a champ until he beats a contender. And he wants to remain a champ must beat the best.Otherwise give up the belt.

If Cotto retires today he will likely be a HoF'er. Can you say that about Canelo? True he is only 21 and hasn't fought any top fighters yet, but that's why he shouldn't be compared to Cotto or any of the best fighters.

True, stack of young talent at 154. Golden boy have Canelo fighting old and shot guys, while they have Kirkland, Angulo, Molina, Lara do his dirty work.

    For the record:

Both Pinto and abdullaev had amateur W's over Cotto,Abdullaev was a gold medalist and he was the one that eliminated Miguel at the olympics. Bailey was a solid puncher who went on to become the IBA champion.Corley troubled both floyd and judah and I think Cotto was the first to ever stop him + He's been every contender's first real test for like the last 10 years. N'dou was stronger and more technically sound than anybody Canelo has faced. Miguel proved his worth against Torres who was knocking everybody out they put in front of him and later won Cotto's belt when he vacated it. Miguel then took malignaggi's 0 before fighting Quintana on his very first fight at WW.

He is in a good position to prove his worth by taking on the best @154. He should of fought Molina instead of Cintron, maybe a good possibility for a next fight. Followed by Lara or Delvin Rodriguez then taking the straps off of K-9 and Trout unifying all 3. He should also fight Chavezjr at 160 not at a catchweight.

When is Cotto going to fight these good fighters at 154? After all isn't Cotto the real champ and Canelo just a prospect with a gift title?

While there are def some haters of Saul on esb, I think most of it are just people being real about him.... just because someone doesnt think hes all that doesnt mean they are haters.

at the end of the day, I go by what I see with Alvarez.

I see a very basic, limited and vulnerable fighter... but also one who is explosive, strong, and powerful, who seems (so far) to have a fighters mentality. But hes got glaring weaknesses and when I just watch him, to me hes just not that good, at least not good enough to warrant the hype he is getting, not to mention the fact that I find it hard to believe he wont be growing out of 154 reasonably soon (2 more years or so) and I see him having it even harder to be a ruler of any sort above 154.

Hes a fun fighter, hes very very young and I can see why he has fans and why those fans are excited about him.... I think hes exciting and cant wait for him to be in a semi big fight as I know it will be a good one, I just dont see a future ruler (unless he improves dramatically, which he could very well do) or really anything super special to warrant the claims of his fans..... as in saying he will be better then cotto.

His fans keep going on and on about his opposition, Im not knocking his opp.... I am knocking what I am seeing in canelo when hes fighting them.

And since you bring up Cotto. You can talk all you want about how bad Cottos opp was..... but Ill tell you one thing, Cotto in the bazan, pinto, and bailey fights to name a few, impress me more then any fight you can show me of canelos. The fighter I see in those fights is superior to the one I see when I watch canelo... (just imo) And thats pretty much the bottom line with me and where Im coming from. Also, if you want a good glimpse of the diifference between Cotto and Canelo.... I wont even get into watching them both fight their common opponent in gomez, because while Cotto completely toyed with him, outboxed him, and beat him up while completely outclassing him while looking untouchable, and gomez actually having a presence in the canelo fight, I do realise that different matchups on different nights with different fighters will lead to different results.

Anyways, thats my take on it, but its just imo.... I am excited to see how his career plays out and we will see how it does. For all the critisism you level against cotto.... and who hes fought and beat, we will see then if canelo gets as far as cotto did.... I have a feeling he wont, and I also have a feeling he will lose a fight along the way before he even gets to the big ones.

That being said... Im not hating on canelo, and by all means I look forward to his next fight, I think hes being moved well and also fair to both him and his critics so far. I hope that continues to be the case. And I think for being 21 years old hes done a hell of a job so far.

as for cotto, do you have something against him? in that other thread you kinda brought up some somewhat reaching criticisms of him.... like not having fought baldomir, why he never unified by fighting the other champs, ect, then bringing him up here. You seem mad people hold Cotto in a higher regard, even prospect to prospect stage with canelo. This is just the way boxing works.... Cotto has been in the hearts of boxing fans for a long time now, canelo is the new kid on the block, its rare that any new face in boxing is going to get the love that one of its more beloved names do, and like it or not, cotto is one of boxings most beloved fighters in this era.

just seems like youve got something against him for one reason or another....

Nothing against Cotto, but as a fan of Canelo its frustruating to see all the criticism he gets and all the double standards. Cotto is the other 154 titlist, and he is supposed to be the better, more skilled fighter but people are more critical and demanding of the young prospect than the supposed Jr. MW champ. Cotto still needs to prove he's the man at 154, maybe more so than the 21 year old Canelo.

And I'm not going to deny that I feel Mexican fighters are set a higher standards and more is expected out of them and they are more easily criticized than other fighters... Hell you and I were huge Vargas fan, and you saw how severe his punishment was for the steroid when you compare to what Toney, Jones, and Mosley suffered.

All I'm trying to do is bring some balance to these boards.
