What's going on with this isn't new to the sport unfortunately.

Cotto was outweighing his opponents by nearly 20 pounds, and his opponents were mostly journeymen.

Bernard Hopkins became a household name beating former Jr. WW at MW, him beginning his career at Lt. HW.

Manny Pacquiao became a household name beating old washed up fighters.

Roy Jones Jr. became a househld name fighting subpar competition in the 90's.

The point is what Canelo is doing isn't new, it isn't the best for the fans, but it's nothing to hate about.

 

-Cotto beat Kelso Pinto for a Vacant strap.
-Cotto's first defense was against Bailey who at the time was 3-3 in his last six fights!!! 3-4 after Cotto got done with him.
-Cotto's 2nd defense was against journeyman Corley who was 1-2 in his last three fights, who nearly KTFO Cotto despite Corley not being known for his punch and more importantly, being outweighted by Cotto by 17 pounds!!
-Cotto's third defense was against Muhammad Abdullaev, who the **** was and is Muhammad Abdullaev?

At WW, Cotto had a good run, but jumping to 154, he hasn't done ****. In fact, he got a title shot against a one legged jew despite losing his last fight, and his fight against Margarito, and then defended his belt against unranked Mayorga and unranked Margarito who was also coming off a loss.

The fact is many fighters have had their resume blown up by easier comp before stepping up to the big dogs. Canelo is no different. He is 22 years old and has accomplished more than many titlists have.

-After become a 140 titlist, who were his 1st, 2nd, and 3rd title defenses against?
-When he fought Journeyman Demarcus Corley, what were their weights on fight night?
