    Short answer:
Yes. He was a hell of a lot better than I had thought he was. :yep

(though Doc told me a couple fights to watch in Bball's thread that had me starting to "sway" my opinion anyhow)

    Not really....

    Let me clarify.

Canelo already has my respect, hes only 22 and is putting in good work. Its impressive.

But to be honest, if anything I overrated him before Trout (and I didn't think all that much of him then). I expected him to overwhelm Trout down the stretch to get a stoppage in there. Or at the least convincingly win the fight impressively. He failed to do either one. He pretty much showed that if anything, he is at this point 'just' better then Trout (and some would debate that) and more reasonable, they are on the same level just about. I expected Canelo to be quite clearly better then Austin.

So in that sense.... he didn't really impress me.

Despite his recent clout from beating Cotto, Trout is not some awesome fighter that going tooth and nail with him and eeking out the W should be considered a glorious accomplishment. Trout is not an elite fighter, he is a solid, well rounded, good fighter.

But there are no elite fighters at 154lbs. And that goes for Canelo. Had he been elite at this stage, he would have won the Trout fight emphatically. But to call him an elite fighter at this stage is laughable. Just because someone is on top of a scattered division doesn't make one elite. You are then just the number 1 fighter at your weight. But its not some boxing rule where when you are number 1 at your weight, you become elite all of a sudden lol. You are either an elite fighter, or youre not. And no elite fighter is going to go tooth and nail with Trout.

So... I wasn't all that impressed, I haven't changed my opinion of him all that much, but I do respect what hes doing because to not respect it would just be foolish. He is putting in good work.

Canelo is doing good for himself, he is improving (his defense is coming along nicely, which is key to his longevity) and to be able to beat Trout while hes still improving, at age 22, is awesome stuff from Alvarez.... everything needs to be kept in the context that hes young, and is improving, and he continues to win. That's all that matters right now.

But throw aside the context, and deal in reality, and hes not elite, and as of now shows me no signs of being a future great or having a long reign as champion should the division become deep again.

And theres nothing wrong with that. Hes still a good fighter, hes a champion, and hes got huge room for improvement on an already solid base. And if he does do that (continue to improve) then he will prove me wrong and become a noteworthy champion in the historic 154/160lb divisions.

I predicted that Canelo will beat Trout and he did it. I've known for all along that he's better than Trout.

In fact, the one who was taken to school in that fight was Trout.

Yes he did. I didn't think he could do it, but he earned my respect.

His workrate and stamina really surprised me, I expected a lot more. His defense was better than expected and his ability to get his range on a taller longer fur was impressive.

But I can't see his stamina or workrate getting better. If he's not even at that Top level yet and can't get that part right, then I can see the distractions of being an even bigger star get in the way.

No one was taken to school in that fight. At all. That is most definitely not a fact.

Why would i give him credit for losing? Lol If Trout had any power in hi hands it would have gotten ugly.

I kinda feel like Canelo was a class above Trout but fought cautiously and maybe respected Trout too much. Given the level of hype around the fight it doesn't surprise me that Canelo expected to be in their against a top-line guy.

It seemed like he had a gameplan which he carried out, even after it perhaps should have been apparent that he could go above and beyond that gameplan and win even more convincingly.

While he didn't display it emphatically, I think you could definitely make a case that Canelo hinted at elite level skills, but held back and did enough to win this particular fight while taking as few risks as possible.

Stamina may certainly prove to be a problem though.

Respect for not avoiding a tough opponent and whom some said (Trout) had a boring style which seems to be the excuse in vogue lately. You fight the best, regardless of their style, you get respect. He still packed the 44K house.

 For what? Surviving to the final bell because he knew Trout would never get a decision? He got boxed to pieces and still tires late wouldn't look out of place fighting for british belts!

The major flaw Canelo has is his workrate IMO.

Canelo couldn't walk trout into the ropes.

Couldn't control the pace in any way.

    Gassed out pretty obviously.

Managed to land a few decent shots, but couldn't put Trout down.

Had no clue how to go to the body, once Trout was negating his head attacks.

Showed some defensive head movement, but only from a safe distance, not while actually engaged. It was more like showboating.

Totally pussied out in the 12th round.

I personally was pleasantly surprised by some of his new found "slickness"

Canelo has a couple of years to get his **** together and be a force to be
    reckoned with.

Yes because he is not a cherry picker.
He is willing to fight the best.
